This disease can be found in various races around the world, both in developing countries and developed countries. However, the incidence of CSOS is higher in developing countries. In Indonesia, the prevalence of CSOS reached 3% in 1996, with most cases originating from recurrent suppurative otitis media. Despite the challenges in treating CSOS, researchers have begun to consider non-infection factors, including allergies, as potential causes of this condition.

Method

Research Design and Sample Selection

The research design used was a case study of control. The research sample consists of 54 patients visiting the ENT-KL Polyclinic in USU FK/H. Adam Malik Medan Hospital between March 2009 and February 2010, consisting of 27 Benigna type OMSK patients and 27 non-omsk patients, in accordance with the inclusion criteria and exclusion. The matching process (matching) is carried out based on the sex and age between the Benigna type CSOS and non-omsk groups. Cukit skin tests are carried out in both groups, and all data are processed using SPSS version 15 software.

Significant Relationship Between Allergies and CSOS Incidence

The results showed a significant relationship between allergies and the incidence of benign type CSOS. From the analysis, it was found that 74.1% of CSOS patients gave a positive reaction to allergens inhalan and food, while only 40.7% in the control group. With the logistics regression test, the value of P = 0.015 (p <0.05), or (odds ratio) = 4,156, and trust interval (CI 95%) = 7,512 - 13,169. This shows that allergies are a significant risk factor for Benign type CSOM. The risk of Benigna type CSOS in patients with allergies is 4.156 times higher than patients who are not allergic.

In further analysis, the most common allergens found in cukit skin tests are cockroaches (44.4%), house dust (29.6%), and a mixture of fungi with human skin flakes (each 25.9%). For food allergens, crabs and tea are the most identified, each reached 37.0%. This finding confirms that allergies, both in allergens inhalan and food, play an important role in the development of benign type CSOS. Identification of specific allergens that trigger reactions in patients is very important for more effective management and treatment.
