Plastic waste management is one of the most pressing issues faced by the world today. The increasing production and consumption of plastic have led to a significant amount of plastic waste, which is difficult to decompose naturally. This has resulted in serious environmental and health problems, including pollution, climate change, and harm to wildlife. One of the effective methods of plastic waste treatment is pyrolysis, a process that uses chemical recycling methods to reduce the volume of plastic waste. Pyrolysis involves the thermal decomposition of plastic waste in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of oil, gas, and solid residues.

The Purpose of This Study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quantity and quality of oil from pyrolysis from polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic types. The study aims to compare the oil produced from pyrolysis with oil in the market, with a focus on its quality and quantity. The results of this study can provide valuable guidelines for the development of plastic recycling technology and contribute to efforts to reduce plastic waste that is increasingly urgent in the community.

Methodology

In this study, each of the 15 kg of polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic types was used. The pyrolysis process was carried out in a temperature range of 250-350 °C. The results of the study showed that the quantity of oil produced from PP plastic reached 12,730 ml, while from LDPE plastic only 10,490 ml. Thus, PP plastic produces 21.3% more oil than LDPE plastic in the same treatment and temperature.

Oil Quality Analysis

The quality of pyrolysis oil can be measured through several parameters, including density, viscosity, and heat values. The highest density for oil from PP plastic pyrolysis is recorded at 250 °C, which is 811 kg/m³. Conversely, the lowest density is obtained at 350 °C, which is 782 kg/m³. This indicates that the density of oil from PP plastic pyrolysis is relatively high, which can be beneficial for its use as a fuel.

Viscosity is also an important parameter that affects oil performance. For PP plastic, the highest viscosity value is found at 250 °C with a value of 2.02 CP, while the lowest viscosity is at 350 °C, which is 0.86 CP. On the other hand, for LDPE plastic, the highest viscosity occurs at 350 °C of 1.35 cp, and the lowest at 250 °C with a value of 1.14 cp. This indicates that the viscosity of oil from PP plastic pyrolysis is relatively high, which can be beneficial for its use as a fuel.

Furthermore, the heat value of oil from pyrolysis is also measured. The highest heat value for PP plastic pyrolysis oil is recorded at 350 °C, reaching 10,870 kcal/g, while the lowest heat value is obtained at 250 °C, which is 10,386 kcal/g. This shows that with the increase in temperature, there is a potential increase in the energy quality of the oil produced.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of this study indicate that pyrolysis is an effective method for processing plastic waste into quality oil. PP plastic is proven to be more productive in producing oil than LDPE, with oil quality which also shows good performance in terms of density, viscosity, and heat value. This study provides valuable guidelines for the development of plastic recycling technology and can contribute to efforts to reduce plastic waste that is increasingly urgent in the community. With a better understanding of the process of pyrolysis and the results, it is hoped that more innovative solutions can emerge to deal with plastic waste that is a global challenge today.
