Relationship of Socio-Demographic and Socio-Economic Factors with PUS Participation in the KB Program in the Medan Petisah City Puskesmas Working Area in Medan 2005

Introduction

Family planning (KB) is a crucial effort made to plan the number of children and the distance of pregnancy by using contraceptives. The participation of fertile age couples (PUS) in the family planning program is strongly influenced by family planning service officers in health facilities, which plays an important role in providing information about the use of contraception and availability of contraceptives. In the working area of the Petisah City Health Center in Medan City, the level of PUS participation in the family planning program was recorded at 57.60%, this figure is still far from the target set, which is 80%. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between socio-demographic and socio-economic factors with PUS participation in the family planning program.

Methodology

This study uses an analytical descriptive survey method with a cross-sectional approach to evaluate the relationship between socio-demographic and socio-economic factors with PUS participation in the family planning program. Data was taken from 100 PUS using direct interviews, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test.

Socio-Demographic Factors

The results showed that 64% of respondents were married at the age of 20-35 years, and 69% had been married for more than five years. In addition, 83% of respondents work as housewives, and their husbands also work as traders with the same percentage. The education level of respondents in the medium category (SLTA) reached 60%, while 51% of respondents had income above the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP).

Socio-Economic Factors

The level of PUS participation in the family planning program is still fairly low, with only 55% of the 100 PUSS involved in the program. The results of the analysis showed a significant relationship between the first age of marriage and participation in the family planning program, especially in groups that have more than two lives. In addition, there is a relationship between the level of education and the participation of the PUS in the family planning program in groups with more than two children, as well as income related to the participation of the PUS in the family planning program in the condition of the number of children live both less than or more than two.

Discussion

From these findings, it can be concluded that the socio-demographic factor - including the first age of marriage and the number of children live - as well as socio-economic - including education and income - has a strong relationship with the participation of the PUS in the family planning program. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the role of family planning officers in providing counseling to the public about the ideal age for marriage and the number of children who are recommended. In addition, it is very important for the government to improve community education and provide affordable family planning services, especially for people who are less able. This effort is expected to increase PUS participation in family planning programs, so that the goal of regulating the number and distance of birth can be achieved optimally.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of socio-demographic and socio-economic factors in influencing PUS participation in the family planning program. The findings of this study suggest that the government and health facilities should focus on improving community education and providing affordable family planning services to increase PUS participation in family planning programs. By doing so, the goal of regulating the number and distance of birth can be achieved optimally.
