Type, Prevalence, and Intensity of Endoparasites in Cotton Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus) in Citra Pesona Ladangku Wildlife Park, Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra

Introduction

The Citra Pesona Ladangku Wildlife Park, located in Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, is a popular destination for animal enthusiasts and researchers alike. The park is home to a variety of animals, including cotton chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), which are an important part of the ecosystem. However, like many other animals, cotton chickens are susceptible to endoparasitic infections, which can have a significant impact on their health and productivity. In this study, we aimed to determine the level of infection and analyze the prevalence and intensity of endoparasites found in cotton chickens in the Citra Pesona Ladangku Wildlife Park.

Methods

In June 2022, a study was conducted on endoparasitic infections in cotton chickens in the Citra Pesona Ladangku Wildlife Park. A total of 14 cotton chicken feces samples were taken to be analyzed. The sampling process was carried out twice, once a week for two weeks. The stool samples were then examined in the Parasitology Laboratory of the Medan Veterinary Center using the EGP MC method.

Results

The results of the analysis showed the presence of five endoparasitic species found in cotton chickens, namely Ascaridia sp., Capillaria sp., Eimeria sp., Heterakis sp., and Strongyloides sp. The most commonly found infection was Ascaridia sp., with a prevalence of 25% classified in the frequent category, as well as the intensity of the attack reached 542.85, which is also a very heavy category. In addition, Heterakis sp. had a prevalence of 28.57% (often) with an attack intensity of 400 (very heavy); Strongyloides sp. also showed a prevalence of 25% (often) with infection intensity of 457.14 (very severe). Meanwhile, Capillaria sp. had a fairly high prevalence, which is 82.14% (usually) with the intensity of attacks reaching 660.86 (very heavy). Eimeria sp. became a species with a prevalence of 67.85% (often) and very high attack intensity, reaching 2,957, which is classified in the super infection category.

Discussion

From the results of the analysis above, it can be concluded that Capillaria sp. is a parasite with the highest prevalence in cotton chickens, while Eimeria sp. shows the highest intensity of the infection. This is a special concern for cotton chicken breeders, because high infections can cause a decrease in chicken health and their productivity. Efforts to prevent and control parasitic infestations must be carried out to maintain livestock health and increase production results.

From an animal health perspective, endoparasitic control needs to be the main focus in the management of chicken maintenance. The application of a comprehensive parasitic control program, including routine monitoring and the use of appropriate antiparasites, is very important to keep the chicken population healthy. In addition, education to breeders about the symptoms of parasitic infections and how to prevent them is also very necessary so that farmers can take proactive steps in maintaining the health of their chickens.

Conclusion

By understanding the type, prevalence, and intensity of endoparasitic infections in cotton chickens, it is expected to increase awareness of the importance of animal health and better livestock management. Further research on the effect of endoparasites on the health and productivity of cotton chickens also needs to be done to obtain a clearer and comprehensive picture of this problem.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Regular monitoring: Regular monitoring of cotton chickens for endoparasitic infections should be carried out to prevent and control parasitic infestations.
Comprehensive parasitic control program: A comprehensive parasitic control program, including routine monitoring and the use of appropriate antiparasites, should be implemented to keep the chicken population healthy.
Education and training: Education and training programs should be provided to breeders about the symptoms of parasitic infections and how to prevent them.
Further research: Further research on the effect of endoparasites on the health and productivity of cotton chickens should be conducted to obtain a clearer and comprehensive picture of this problem.
