Planning for a Roof Solar Power Plant with an On-Grid System at the PTPN II General Hospital Tanjung Selamat Langkat, North Sumatra

Introduction

Indonesia has set a target to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060, and one of the concrete steps is to encourage the use of new renewable energy (EBT), such as solar energy. The PTPN II General Hospital Tanjung Selamat in Langkat, North Sumatra, has a large roof area with great potential to implement Solar Power Plant (PLTS) technology with an on-grid system. This study aims to analyze the potential for the application of the roof PLTS using the Helioscope simulation to calculate the energy that can be produced and the installation costs.

Background

The use of solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its numerous benefits, including reducing dependence on fossil energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing energy efficiency. The PTPN II General Hospital Tanjung Selamat has a land area of 13.56 hectares, which provides a large roof area that can be utilized for solar energy production. The hospital's location in Langkat, North Sumatra, also receives an average of 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, making it an ideal location for solar energy production.

Methodology

This study analyzed three schemes for the application of the roof PLTS:

Utilizing the entire roof area: This scheme aims to maximize the energy potential produced by utilizing the entire roof area of the hospital.
Utilizing the installed power capacity of PLN: This scheme considers the power limit that can be connected to the PLN network, which is the state-owned electricity company in Indonesia.
Utilizing part of the roof area: This scheme aims to utilize a portion of the roof area, which can be a more economical option.

The analysis was conducted using the Helioscope simulation, which calculated the energy that can be produced and the installation costs for each scheme. The results of the analysis showed that:

Using the Solar Jinko Solar 72HL4 Module with a capacity of 550 WP, the potential energy produced reached 451.9 MWH per year using 669 solar modules and 3 inverter units. The investment needed for this scheme reaches Rp. 4,062,941,762.
By maximizing the installed power capacity of PLN, the energy potential produced reached 231.5 MWH per year with 340 solar modules and 2 inverter units. The investment for this scheme reaches Rp. 3,364,450,000.
Utilizing part of the roof area produces an energy potential of 42.48 MWH per year with 60 solar modules and 2 inverter units. The investment needed for this scheme is Rp. 594,648,251.

The second and third schemes offer more economical options, with smaller energy potential. The recommendation given is to start with a more economical scheme, such as the second or third scheme, and can then be increased to the first scheme in line with the needs and availability of funds.

The implementation of the API-Grid PLTS at PTPN II Tanjung Selamat General Hospital is a strategic step in supporting government programs to achieve the Net Zero Emission target. In addition, the application of PLTS will also increase energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve hospital images.

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential for the application of the roof PLTS at PTPN II Tanjung Selamat General Hospital. However, there are several areas that require further research, including:
