USU Student Perception of the Participation of the 2009 Indonesian Princess at the Miss Universe event

Introduction

The participation of Indonesian women in international beauty pageants, such as the Miss Universe event, has been a topic of interest and debate in recent years. The 2009 Indonesian Princess, Qory Sandriovaria, was one of the contestants who represented Indonesia in the Miss Universe event. This study aims to explore the perception of students from the University of North Sumatra (USU) regarding Qory's participation in the event. By examining the perspective of students from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) Province, this study aims to understand the extent to which they support Qory's participation and how their views on the values carried in the event.

Background

The Miss Universe event is a global beauty pageant that has been held annually since 1952. The event aims to promote international understanding and cultural exchange among participating countries. However, the event has also been criticized for its objectification of women and the emphasis on physical beauty. In Indonesia, the participation of women in beauty pageants has been a topic of debate, with some arguing that it is a form of exploitation and others seeing it as an opportunity for women to showcase their talents and abilities.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive research method, which involves collecting and analyzing data to describe a situation or phenomenon. The sample consisted of 90 USU students from various faculties, including medicine, law, agriculture, engineering, economics, dentistry, literature, MIPA, ISIP, public health, psychology, pharmacy, and nursing. The selection of samples was carried out using the Taro Yamane formula, proportional stratification techniques, and purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire consisting of 32 questions, and the results were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 15.0.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of students supported Qory's participation in the Miss Universe event. They believed that Qory had the potential to compete and that her participation would be a positive representation of Indonesia. However, there were concerns related to Qory's appearance, particularly regarding how to dress that was considered less reflecting Islamic values held by the Province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. Most respondents agreed that even though they did not mind whether Qory was wearing a hijab or not, her appearance still had an impact on the image and dignity of NAD Province.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that student perception is not only influenced by personal values but also by a broader social and cultural context. In the midst of the development of globalization and the influence of mass media, students' understanding of women's participation in beauty events such as Miss Universe began to experience a shift. Although there is still a thick traditional view, there is also a recognition that this event can be a platform to display the talents and abilities of Indonesian women at the international level.

However, students continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining the dignity and values of local culture. Qory's involvement in the event should be a bridge between individual achievements and responsibilities for the values adopted by the community. This shows that despite support for Qory's participation, there is hope that she will still be able to reflect the cultural and religious identity of her home province.

Conclusion

This study provides an overview of how USU students view the participation of the 2009 Indonesian Princess at the Miss Universe event, as well as their hopes for better representations in maintaining existing cultural and religious values. This information is expected to be a material consideration for further discussion about the role of women in the social and cultural context in Indonesia.

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample consisted of only 90 USU students, which may not be representative of the broader population. Secondly, the study used a descriptive research method, which may not be able to capture the complexity of the issue. Finally, the study focused on the perception of students from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, which may not be representative of other provinces in Indonesia.

Future research should aim to explore the perception of women from different provinces in Indonesia regarding their participation in beauty pageants. Additionally, research should focus on the impact of globalization and mass media on women's participation in beauty events.
