Introduction The level of fertility, or the number of births that occur in a population, is one of the important factors that affects the growth of the population. In North Sumatra Province, two main factors that affect the level of fertility are the number of fertile age pairs (PUS) and per capita income. The high number of fertile age couples can have a direct impact on the birth rate, while per capita income reflects the welfare of the community, which also plays a role in family decisions regarding having children. Understanding the relationship between these two factors is crucial in designing effective family planning programs and improving the economic welfare of the community .
Background The population growth in North Sumatra Province has been a concern for the local government in recent years. The high fertility rate in the region has put pressure on the available resources, including education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. The government has been implementing various family planning programs to control population growth, but the effectiveness of these programs is still uncertain . Therefore, it is essential to analyze the factors that affect the fertility level in North Sumatra Province to design more effective policies.
Methodology This study aims to analyze the effect of the number of fertile age pairs and per capita income on the level of fertility in North Sumatra. The methods used in this study are descriptive analysis and quantitative analysis using multiple linear regression methods. Through this approach, researchers hope to gain a clearer understanding of the relationship between the three variables . The data used in this study were collected from a survey of 1,500 respondents in North Sumatra Province.
Descriptive Analysis The results of descriptive analysis show the characteristics of respondents and provide a general picture of the variables studied. The analysis shows that the majority of respondents are married couples with a high school education or higher . The average age of respondents is 35 years, and the average number of children per family is 3.5. The analysis also shows that the per capita income in North Sumatra Province is relatively low, with an average income of IDR 2.5 million per month .
Quantitative Analysis Quantitative analysis using multiple linear regression shows that there are both positive and negative influences between the number of fertile age pairs and per capita income on fertility rates. The coefficient of determination of 0.7071 shows that 71% of variations in the fertility rate in North Sumatra can be explained by the number of fertile age pairs and per capita income, while the remaining 29% are explained by other factors that are not examined in this study .

This reflects a phenomenon where a more prosperous society may focus more on the quality of life of their children than quantity.
