Palm oil is one of the most widely consumed edible oils globally, with Indonesia being the world's largest producer of palm oil. The palm oil industry plays a significant role in the economy of Labuhan Batu Utara Regency and Asahan Regency, providing employment opportunities and generating revenue for local communities. This study aims to analyze the efficiency and margin of FFB on palm oil marketing actors in Labuhan Batu Utara Regency and Asahan Regency.

Background of Palm Oil Marketing in Labuhan Batu Utara and Asahan Regency

Palm oil marketing in Labuhan Batu Utara Regency and Asahan Regency involves a complex network of farmers, traders, and other marketing actors. The marketing system is characterized by multiple channels, with farmers selling their FFB to collecting traders, who then sell them to processing companies (PKS). The efficiency and margin of FFB on palm oil marketing actors in these regions are influenced by various factors, including production costs, price of FFB, and marketing channels.

Research Methodology

This study employed a qualitative research approach, using purposive sampling techniques to select farmer samples and marketing institutions. Data collection was carried out through interviews using questionnaires and search methods for collecting traders. The analysis methods applied include Shepperd's Method, Acharya and Anggarwal’s Method, Composite Index Method, Marketing Efficiency Index Method, and Soekartawi Method.

Analysis Results

The analysis results show that there are two main marketing channels:

Channel 1: Farmers - Collecting Traders - RAM - PKS
Channel 2: Farmers - Collecting Traders - PKS

All farmers are involved in the sales, transportation, and market information search functions. The collecting traders are responsible for the purchase, transportation, standardization, risk management, and delivery of market information to farmers.

Factors Affecting Marketing Channel Selection

In the selection of marketing channels, factors such as the existence of subscriptions, service quality, and contract are the main considerations for marketing actors. This study found that the most efficient marketing channel was involving partner farmers, who had the shortest marketing pathway and gave the largest portion to producers.

Conclusion

This study confirms the importance of understanding the marketing system in increasing efficiency for small farmers. Through an in-depth analysis of the marketing channel and functions carried out, it is expected that farmers can make better decisions in the selection of marketing channels that will increase their profits. Strengthening relations between farmers and traders through efficient marketing channels can contribute to the economic welfare of oil palm farmers in the area.

Recommendations for Improving Palm Oil Marketing in Labuhan Batu Utara and Asahan Regency

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Strengthening relations between farmers and traders: Efforts should be made to strengthen the relationships between farmers and traders, including the establishment of partnerships and contracts that benefit both parties.
Improving marketing channels: The marketing channels used by farmers and traders should be improved to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Providing training and education: Farmers and traders should be provided with training and education on marketing and business management to improve their skills and knowledge.
Increasing transparency and fairness: Efforts should be made to increase transparency and fairness in the palm oil marketing system, including the use of fair prices and transparent marketing channels.
