This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge, perception, and trust of the community in Tambun Nabolon Village, Siantar Martoba District, Pematang Siantar City, related to the use of antibiotics. Therefore, a good understanding of antibiotics is needed so that people can use this drug wisely. This study uses the cross-sectional method involving 277 respondents taken by purposive random sampling. Data collection activities were carried out in August 2018. The questionnaire used in this study was divided into four parts: demographics, knowledge, perception, and trust. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square method to identify the relationship between variables.

Research Results

The results showed that the knowledge, perception, and trust of the public for the use of antibiotics were in the lack of category, with a percentage of 54.2%, 44.4%, and 51.6% respectively. In addition, the results of the statistical test show a significant relationship between knowledge of the use of antibiotics and demographic characteristics such as age, last education, and work, with a p value <0.1. There is also the relationship between knowledge and trust in the use of antibiotics, as well as knowledge and perceptions of the use of antibiotics, with the same P value.

Conclusion and Implications

Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the level of knowledge, perception, and trust of the people in Tambun Nabolon Village is relatively low. This shows that there are still many people who use antibiotics inappropriately. To overcome this problem, more intensive education efforts are needed about the correct use of antibiotics. Authorities and health institutions need to play an active role in providing appropriate information and building public awareness regarding the risk of use of unwise antibiotics.
