Methodology and Kinetics Models Used

This study employed several kinetics models to analyze COD degradation, including the Order Model One Removal Substrate, Grau Second Order, and Modified Stover-Kicannon. For VSS growth, the models used were order one, the logistics equation, cone, and gompertz modification. The choice of these models was based on their ability to accurately describe the complex processes involved in COD degradation and VSS growth.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study showed that the Grau Second Order model was able to predict the level of waste COD with high accuracy, reaching 99%, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.902. The kinetics constants A and B of the Grau Second Order model obtained were 15,553 days⁻¹ and 4.617, respectively. These values indicate that the degradation rate is directly proportional to the remaining COD concentration, and the degradation process lasts longer.

In contrast, the logistics model showed the best accuracy in explaining VSS growth, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.945, mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 0.330, mean square of error (MSE) of 3,319, root mean square of error (RMSE) of 1,821, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 9,749, and Akaike information criterion (AIC) of 0.440. These results indicate that the logistics model is superior in describing the growth of VSS, which follows the sigmoid (s) form, where growth occurs exponentially in the early stages, then slows up to the maximum limit.

Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Grau Second Order model is the most suitable model for correlating COD degradation in the LCPKS acidogenesis process, while the logistics model has the highest level of accuracy in explaining VSS growth. This finding provides important information for the design and optimization of the LCPKS acidogenesis process. By understanding the kinetics of COD degradation and VSS growth, we can control and maximize the efficiency of the process, so as to produce high-quality biogas and minimize environmental impacts.
