Introduction

The rapid development of information technology has revolutionized the way businesses interact with their customers. The internet has become a powerful medium for companies to reach a broader audience, promote their products, and services. The rise of e-commerce platforms has made it easier for consumers to shop online, including students from the Masters of Management Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU). This study aims to investigate the effect of relational marketing strategies on customer satisfaction in online purchases among USU Management Science students.

The Role of Relational Marketing in Online Customer Satisfaction

Relational marketing is a key concept in building strong, long-term relationships between companies and consumers. It encompasses four essential elements: commitment, empathy, reciprocity, and trust. Commitment refers to the consistency and reliability of a company's services, while empathy involves understanding and responding to customers' needs and emotions. Reciprocity is about providing value to customers in exchange for their loyalty, and trust is built through transparent communication and reliable services.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative descriptive method with a descriptive explanatory design. The research population consisted of all Masters of USU Management Science students who have made online purchases. A sample of 100 respondents was chosen through accidental sampling techniques. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation studies, and analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis.

Results

The results of this study showed that the variables of commitment, empathy, reciprocity, and trust together had a positive and significant influence on customer satisfaction in online purchases. However, the commitment variable was found to be the most dominant factor in influencing customer satisfaction. Interestingly, the empathy variable did not show a positive and significant effect on online purchasing decisions.

Empathy, although it does not have a significant influence in this study, remains an important element in building more personal relationships and increasing customer loyalty.
