Introduction

The marketing efficiency of curly red chili in Karo Regency is a crucial aspect of the agricultural industry in Indonesia. The study conducted by Merry Christina Kaban aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the marketing channel of curly red chili in the area. In this study, Kaban was accompanied by two supervisors, namely Mrs. Ir. Iskandarini, MM, Ph.D as Chair of the Supervising Commission and Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S as a member of the Supervising Commission.

Research Objectives

The research conducted by Kaban has two main objectives:

To describe the current curly red chili marketing system in Karo Regency: This objective aims to provide an overview of the existing marketing system of curly red chili in the area, including the various channels and intermediaries involved.
To analyze the efficiency of each curly red chili marketing channel based on marketing margins and the results received by farmers (Farmer’s Share): This objective aims to assess the efficiency of each marketing channel and identify the most efficient channel for farmers.

Methodology

The research was conducted between July and August 2020 using the purposive sampling method, involving 89 respondents of curly red chili farmers and 11 merchant respondents. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively; Qualitative data is used to analyze marketing channels, while quantitative data is used to assess the efficiency of marketing operations with the help of Microsoft Excel 2007.

Research Results

The results showed that there were three curly red chili marketing channels that were generally passed by farmers in Karo Regency:

Farmers → Intermediary Traders (Village) → Collecting traders → retail traders → end consumers
Farmers → Collecting traders → retailers → end consumers
Farmers → Intermediary traders → Gathering traders → retailers → end consumers

The most widely used marketing channels by farmers are the second channel, chosen by 52.81% of respondents. Followed by the first channel of 28.09% and the third channel was 19.10%.

Operationally, the second channel is proven to be more efficient. This is because the channel reduces the number of intermediaries in the distribution chain, so that transaction costs can be minimized and farmers get a greater part of the results.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

Marketing efficiency is very important for the sustainability of farm businesses, especially for small farmers. By choosing an efficient marketing channel, farmers can maximize their income. Based on the results of the study, the second channel provides better benefits for farmers, because they can directly deal with collecting traders who buy in large quantities.

In addition, it is important for farmers to understand the existing market conditions and distribution channels. Most farmers may not be aware of various marketing channel options that they can choose. Therefore, education about the marketing system and yield management becomes very important to improve the welfare of farmers.

In a broader context, the efficiency of marketing curly red chili in Karo Regency also reflects the dynamics of the agricultural market in Indonesia. The more efficient a marketing channel, the less likely there is a buildup of goods that can harm farmers and consumers. Improving this marketing system not only has an impact on farmers' income, but also on the stability of the price of chili on the market.

The study provides valuable insights for stakeholders in the agricultural industry, including local governments, to formulate policies that support the development of a better marketing system. Thus, the efficiency of marketing curly red chili in Karo Regency can increase, support farmers' income, and ultimately contribute to regional food security.
