Introduction

The Jakarta Post newspaper has been a primary source of information for the public during the Covid-19 outbreak. As a leading newspaper in Indonesia, it has played a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely news to the public. Methodology

This research uses the textual metaph function theory put forward by Halliday (2014) and applies a qualitative approach with the documentation method. The data collected from the Jakarta Post newspaper consists of news articles related to the COVID-19 outbreak. The analysis focuses on identifying the types of themes and thematic progression patterns contained in the news articles.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the topical theme dominated with a percentage of appearance of 77.3%, followed by textual themes which reached 21.5%, and the interpersonal theme was only 1.2%. In a further analysis of the theme marking, it was found that topical themes did not have a higher frequency of appearance, which suggests that the Jakarta Post tends to focus on the delivery of concrete and factual information.

Thematic Progression Analysis

The thematic progression analysis shows that linear patterns are the most common patterns found, reaching 55.8% of the total data. This was followed by a constant pattern with 36.4%, a split-rheme pattern which covered 5.2%, and the lowest proportion of the theme, which was 2.6%. This finding confirms that the existence of topical themes does not fight and linear patterns play a crucial role in creating continuity between clauses in newspapers.
