Spodoptera Fugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Caterpillar Attack on Corn Plants (Zea Mays) in 4 Locations of Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency

Introduction

Corn is a vital crop in Indonesia, providing food, medicine, and animal feed. However, the presence of pests like the Spodoptera Fugiperda caterpillar can threaten corn production in various regions. This study aims to evaluate the intensity of the S. Fugiperda attack in four villages located in Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency, Indonesia. The villages are Perbesi, Kuta Galoh, Kuta Bangun, and Bunga Baru.

Corn plants (Zea mays) are the second most important food commodity after rice in Indonesia. The country's corn production is crucial for food security and economic growth. However, the presence of pests like the S. Fugiperda caterpillar can significantly impact corn production, leading to financial losses for farmers. Therefore, it is essential to understand the intensity of the S. Fugiperda attack in different regions and develop effective control strategies.

Methodology

This study was conducted using a survey method and purposive sampling technique. The observation of the level of damage was carried out in the span of 10 to 45 days after planting (HST) with an observation interval one time in five days. The study aimed to evaluate the intensity of the S. Fugiperda attack in four villages and identify the most affected village.

The results showed that the intensity of the damage caused by S. Fugiperda in Bunga Baru Village did not show a significant difference compared to the villages of Perbesi, Kuta Galoh, and Kuta Bangun. However, the village of Kuta Bangun showed a significant difference compared to Perbesi and Kuta Galoh, with the highest level of damage reaching 10.4% in the fourth observation.

Results

The percentage of damage that occurred in the villages of Perbesi, Kuta Galoh, Kuta Bangun, and new flowers did not show a striking difference. Nevertheless, the highest corn production was recorded in Perbesi Village, which was 52 kg from the observation area of 100 m² with a total of 500 stems. Conversely, Bunga Baru Village recorded the lowest production results, which is 43 kg with the same condition.

Analysis and Explanation

The S. Fugiperda Grayak caterpillar attack on corn in Tigabinanga District shows that this pest is able to cause significant losses, especially in the village of Kuta Bangun. The results of this study are important for farmers and stakeholders in the management of corn crops, especially in pest control.
