Introduction

Soil stabilization is a crucial method used to improve the physical properties of soil, increasing its carrying capacity and reducing the potential damage to structures built on it. In this study, we focus on the use of sugarcane ash, a waste product from sugar cane grinding that is often not utilized optimally. Our research aims to compare the support of clay soil mixed with cement and sugarcane ash with previous studies on mixtures of rice husk ash and cement ash, and ash of palm shells and cement.

Background

Soil stabilization is a widely used method to improve the physical properties of soil, making it more suitable for construction purposes. Research Methodology

Our research process begins with the original soil sampling, which refers to the research of Fadilla (2014). We then conduct laboratory tests to measure the value of index properties and soil engineering properties using the UCT (Unconfined Compression Test) method. The analysis shows that the soil sample has a water content of 20.41%, specific gravity of 2.65, and is classified as an unorganized clay. In addition, the weight of the soil is recorded at 1.24 gr/cm³ with a liquid limit of 44.23 and the plasticity index 29.85. Based on the classification of USCS (Unified Soil Classification System), the land is included in the CL (Clay-Low Plasticity) category, while in the AASHTO classification, including the A-7-6 type.

Results

From the results of the study, it was found that the addition of cement and sugarcane ash can reduce the liquid limit of the soil to 20.71 and the plasticity index to 7.04 after the curing process for 7 days. Interestingly, with the increase in the percentage of sugarcane ash, the maximum density of the soil also increased, which reached the maximum value of the sugarcane ash content of 9%. The increase in sugarcane ash content contributes significantly to an increase in free compressive strength, which has increased to 61.80% to 12% ash content. However, above these levels, namely 13% and 14%, free compressive strength shows a decrease and is stable at 53.88% and 55.46% respectively.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

The results of this study underline the importance of the use of industrial waste in the process of soil stabilization. Sugar cane ash, which is usually wasted, shows great potential in improving the quality of clay soils. Decreased liquid limits and significant plasticity index after the addition of sugarcane and cement ash show that the process of stabilization is effective in changing the physical properties of the soil.

Furthermore, by knowing that the peak of free compressive strength occurs at 12% levels, this indicates the optimal point where the mixing material makes the most effective contribution to the soil structure. Conversely, a decrease in compressive strength at a higher level shows that there is a limit in the use of sugarcane ash, which may be caused by an ideal mixing or adverse effects of the excess mixing material.

Conclusion

This research provides new insights on the potential for the use of sugarcane ash in soil improvement, which not only helps in managing industrial waste but also increases the carrying capacity of clay soils. This is very relevant considering the challenges of infrastructure in many regions that require innovative solutions in land management for more sustainable development.

Based on the findings of this study, we recommend the use of sugarcane ash as a stabilizing agent for clay soil. The optimal percentage of sugarcane ash is 12%, which provides the highest free compressive strength.
