Introduction

Nasal polyps are a chronic and debilitating condition that affects the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, causing inflammation, tissue remodeling, and extracellular matrix fibrosis. The results were then analyzed to determine the relationship between MMP-9 expression and the histopathological types and stages of nasal polyps.

Results

The results of this study showed that 66.7% of cases of nasal polyps occurred in men, while 60.6% occurred in the age group ≥40 years. The most common histopathological type of polyps was type 1 (allergic polyps) with a percentage of 69.7%, and as many as 54.5% of cases were found in stage 2. MMP-9 expression was detected as positive (overexpression) in 51.5% of cases of nasal polyps. MMP-9 expression was also found to be higher in type 1 nasal polyps (allergic polyps) with a percentage of 39.4%, and in stage 3 nasal polyps with a percentage of 33.3%.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the expression of MMP-9 in nasal polyps tends to be higher, especially in cases of allergic and stage 3 polyps. This shows the possibility of an important role in the development and pathogenesis of nasal polyps. MMP-9 can degrade ECM, which can cause changes in the structure and function of the nasal mucosa.
