The Effect of Cash Turnover, Receivable Turnover, Inventory Turnover, Fixed Asset Turnover, and Sales Growth on Profitability in Manufacturing Companies in the Consumer Goods Sector Listed on the IDX in the 2017-2020 Period

Introduction

The consumer goods sector is one of the most competitive and dynamic industries in the world, with companies constantly seeking ways to improve their profitability and stay ahead of the competition. In Indonesia, the consumer goods sector is a significant contributor to the country's economy, with many companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). However, despite the importance of this sector, there is a lack of research on the factors that affect the profitability of manufacturing companies in this sector.

This study aims to examine the impact of several financial variables, namely cash turnover, receivable turnover, inventory turnover, fixed asset turnover, and sales growth on the profitability of manufacturing companies in the consumer goods sector listed on the IDX during the period 2017 to 2020. The study uses a population of 44 registered companies, with purposive sampling technique producing 16 companies as samples.

Methodology

The study uses descriptive statistical methods, classical assumptions, regression tests, and hypothesis tests to analyze the data. The independent variables consist of cash turnover, receivables, inventory, fixed assets, and sales growth, while profitability is the dependent variable. The type of data used is secondary data, obtained from the company's financial statements.

Based on the results of the study, it was found that:

The Rotation of Fixed Assets

This variable has a positive and significant effect on company profitability. This shows that the more efficient the company in utilizing its fixed assets, the higher the profitability that can be achieved. By managing fixed assets effectively, companies can increase production and operational efficiency, which in turn contributes to increased income.

The results of this study are consistent with previous research that has found a positive relationship between fixed asset turnover and profitability (e.g., [1], [2]). This suggests that companies that are able to utilize their fixed assets efficiently are more likely to achieve higher profitability.

Cash Turnover

The results show that cash turnover has a negative and significant influence on profitability. This may reflect the situation where the company is too fast in issuing cash without careful planning, resulting in pressure on cash flow and reducing profitability potential.

Inventory Turnover, Receivables, and Sales Growth

This study provides a comprehensive view of financial dynamics in manufacturing companies in the consumer goods sector in Indonesia and can be a reference for further research and better business practices. The findings of this study suggest that companies need to focus on improving their fixed asset turnover, managing their cash flow effectively, and considering the simultaneous effect of multiple financial factors to improve their profitability.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Companies need to manage their cash flow effectively to avoid cash flow problems and maintain a balance between cash inflows and out.
Companies need to consider the simultaneous effect of multiple financial factors when making strategic decisions to improve their profitability.

Limitations

This study has several limitations that need to be addressed in future research. Firstly, the study only focuses on manufacturing companies in the consumer goods sector listed on the IDX, and therefore, the findings may not be generalizable to other sectors or companies. Secondly, the study uses secondary data, which may not be accurate or up-to-date. Finally, the study only examines the impact of five financial variables on profitability, and therefore, other factors may also impact profitability.

Future Research Directions

Future research can build on the findings of this study by examining the impact of other financial variables on profitability, such as accounts receivable turnover, accounts payable turnover, and return on equity.
