The Effect of Giving Mycorrhiza and Chicken Manure on the Growth and Production of Okra Plants (Abelmoschus esculentus L.)

Introduction

Okra plants (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) are one of the most widely cultivated vegetables in tropical regions, including Indonesia. The growth and production of okra plants are influenced by various factors, including soil fertility, nutrient availability, and environmental conditions. Materials and Methods

This study was conducted at Bunga Alley, Jalan Siswa, Marindal Village, Patumbak District, Medan City, North Sumatra, with a height of ± 25 meters above sea level (MDPL) in the period September to November 2022. The study used a random group design (RAK) with two treatment factors: the dose of mycorrhiza (0; 7.5; 15 and 22.5 g) and the dose of chicken manure (0; 45; 90 and 135 g). The experiment was replicated three times, and the data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results

The results showed that the dose of mycorrhiza had no significant effect on plant height, stem diameter, flowering age, number of flowers, number of fruits, fruit weight, fresh weight, fresh root weight, canopy dry weight, root dry weight, and harvest index. Conversely, the dose of chicken manure significantly affected the height of the plant at the age of 4-6 weeks after planting (MST), the diameter of the stem at the age of 4-6 MST, the age of flowering, the number of flowers, the number of fruit, the weight of the fruit, the fresh weight of the canopy, fresh root weight, dry weight, root dry weight, and harvest index. This treatment had no significant effect on plant height at the ages of 2 and 3 MST and stem diameter at the ages of 2 and 3 MST.

Discussion

The results of this study showed that the provision of mycorrhizae did not have a significant impact on the growth and production of okra plants. This is probably caused by several factors, such as the type of mycorrhiza used, soil conditions at the study site, or the ability of okra plants to absorb nutrients from the soil optimally without the help of mycorrhizae. On the other hand, chicken manure proven to be effective in increasing the growth and production of okra plants. This is because chicken manure is rich in macro and micro nutrients needed by plants, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter that can increase soil fertility.

Conclusion

This study shows that chicken manure is a more dominant factor in increasing the growth and production of okra plants compared to mycorrhizae. The optimal use of chicken manure can increase the yield of okra plants. Therefore, farmers and researchers should consider using chicken manure as a potential means to improve plant growth and productivity.
