Introduction

Constipation is a common health problem that affects millions of people worldwide, including Indonesia. According to data from the National Health Interview Survey in 1991, around 4.5 million people experienced constipation problems. The lack of fiber intake in the people's diet is one of the factors causing constipation. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is not easily broken down by the body and helps to stimulate intestinal peristalsis, which can help prevent constipation. Despite its importance, many people do not consume enough fiber in their diet.

Research has shown that a high-fiber diet can help reduce the risk of constipation, as well as other health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. The Level of Knowledge of Medical Students Regarding Fiber

This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge of students and students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (USU) class of 2014 regarding the importance of fiber in preventing constipation. The method used in this study is descriptive with a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was carried out simply random sampling by involving 96 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Results

The results showed that in general, the level of knowledge of students and students of the USU Faculty of Medicine for the 2014 fiber was classified as good. Around 72.9% of respondents have a good level of knowledge, 24% has a moderate level of knowledge, and 3.1% has a lack of knowledge. This shows that the majority of students and students have realized the importance of fiber in constipation prevention.

Discussion

The good level of knowledge among medical students is very important because they will become health workers in the future. With a good understanding of the role of fiber in digestive health, they can be more effective in providing information and education to patients about the importance of fiber intake. It also shows that health education in the academic environment has succeeded in raising awareness about this health issue.

However, even though the results show a good level of knowledge, challenges remain. The general public, especially among adults and the elderly, is still very lacking in consuming fiber. Therefore, there needs to be further efforts in the socialization and nutritional education, especially in areas with high prevalence of constipation.

Conclusion

From this study, it is very clear that increasing knowledge about healthy eating patterns, especially fiber intake, must be the main focus in medical education institutions. Health campaigns involving medical students as agents of change can help reduce constipation cases and improve overall public health. Through this article, it is hoped that people will increasingly understand the importance of fiber in everyday diet. By educating ourselves about the choice of healthy food and increasing the consumption of vegetables and fruits, we can all contribute in reducing constipation problems and improving the quality of health.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase the focus on nutrition education in medical schools, especially on the importance of fiber intake.
Conduct health campaigns involving medical students as agents of change to raise awareness about the importance of fiber intake.
Provide education and training to healthcare professionals on the importance of fiber intake and its role in preventing constipation.
Encourage the general public, especially among adults and the elderly, to increase their fiber intake through a balanced diet.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. The sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted only in one university. Therefore, the results may not be generalizable to other populations. Additionally, the study only measured the level of knowledge of medical students and did not assess their behavior or attitudes towards fiber intake.

Future Research Directions

Future research should focus on assessing the behavior and attitudes of medical students and healthcare professionals towards fiber intake. Additionally, studies should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of health campaigns involving medical students as agents of change in reducing constipation cases and improving overall public health.
