Introduction

Methodology

This study used the Experimental Laboratory Method with the "Post-Test Only Control Group Design" research design. A total of 25 stainless steel braces samples were divided into 5 groups. Group A was soaked in artificial saliva for 2 weeks, while groups B, C, D, and E were soaked in a combination of artificial saliva and brewing Arabica coffee with concentrations of A and B for 4 and 8 hours, respectively.

Results

The results showed that the average release of nickel ions in group A was 0.484 ± 0.033 μg/ml. Group B, which was soaked in artificial saliva and Arabica coffee concentration A for 4 hours, showed an average release of nickel ions of 1.626 ± 0.173 μg/ml. Group C, which was soaked for 8 hours, showed a mean release of 1,459 ± 0.066 μg/ml. Group D, which was soaked in Arabica coffee concentration B for 4 hours, showed an average of 1,142 ± 0.113 μg/ml, and group E, which was soaked for 8 hours, showed an average of 0.837 ± 0.010 μg/ml.

Statistical Analysis

Statistical analysis using the One Way Anova test showed a significant difference in the number of nickel ions between the five groups. This indicates that immersion in Arabica coffee steeping, both concentration A and B, for 4 or 8 hours increases the number of nickel ions separated from stainless steel braces.

Implications for Dental Health and Gums

The release of excessive nickel ions can cause allergic reactions, irritation, and discoloration of teeth. Therefore, this research provides strong evidence that the consumption of Arabica coffee can accelerate the process of corrosion in stainless steel braces and increase the release of nickel ions. For orthodontic patients, this study highlights the importance of limiting the consumption of acidic and rich tannin drinks, such as Arabica coffee, during orthodontic treatment.
