Introduction

The use of cooking oil is a common practice in many households, but it is often done in an unhealthy way. Frying food in hot oil can break down the double bonds in the oil, leading to the formation of saturated fats, which can trigger various degenerative diseases. In addition, the repeated use of cooking oil can cause oxidation, which can also lead to health problems. This study aims to investigate the effect of poster media and leaflets on increasing the behavior of housewives in the use of cooking oil in Binjai City.

Background

Community behavior in the use of cooking oil is often influenced by various factors, including lack of knowledge, attitude, and practice. Housewives, in particular, play a crucial role in the household, and their behavior can have a significant impact on the health of their families. However, many housewives are not aware of the negative impact of unhealthy cooking oil use, and they may not have the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices.

Methodology

This study used a pseudo-experiment (quasi-experiment) with a pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 54 housewives, divided into three groups: the media leaflet intervention group, the poster media intervention group, and the control group. Each group contained 18 people. The data was collected using a questionnaire and observation, and the Wilcoxon test was used to analyze the differences before and after the intervention.

Results

The results of the study showed that both poster media and leaflets were effective in improving housewife behavior related to the use of cooking oil. The mean values for the leaflet media were as follows: knowledge of 6.06, attitude of 5.95, and action of 6.67. Meanwhile, for the poster media, the mean values were: knowledge of 4.56, attitude of 7.39, and action of 4.39. These results indicate that both media have a positive influence, but the leaflet media gives more significant results in several aspects.

Discussion

The use of poster media and leaflets as health communication tools has its own advantages. Posters can attract attention with a striking visual design, while leaflets provide more detailed information that can be brought home and read at any time. Both of these media create opportunities to increase housewife knowledge about the impact of unhealthy use of cooking oil, while encouraging them to change behavior to be more positive.

Psychologically, information conveyed in an interesting and easy to understand way can increase public awareness of the importance of health. A more educated housewife about the right way to use cooking oil can make healthier choices for their families. Thus, health education carried out through appropriate media not only has an impact on knowledge, but can also change the attitudes and actions that lead to improving the quality of life.

Conclusion

This study highlights the importance of using poster media and leaflets as health communication tools to increase housewife behavior in the use of cooking oil. The results of the study show that both media are effective in improving knowledge, attitude, and action related to healthy cooking oil use. The study also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between health instructors, the community, and the media in increasing health awareness.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Health extension officers at the Puskesmas should provide more intensive health education regarding the use of healthy cooking oil and the negative impact of the use of unhealthy cooking oil.
The delivery of this information can be done through attractive media posters and leaflets to make it easier for housewives to understand.
Health instructors, the community, and the media should collaborate to increase health awareness and promote healthy behavior among housewives.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a specific location. Secondly, the study only focused on housewives, and the results may not be generalizable to other populations. Finally, the study only used two types of media, and the results may not be applicable to other types of media.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to investigate the effectiveness of other types of media, such as social media and television, in promoting healthy behavior among housewives. Additionally, research should be conducted to explore the impact of health education on other populations, such as men and children.
