The Health Status of Trees in Merdeka Park and Binjai City Toddler Park, North Sumatra Province: A Comparative Study

Introduction

Trees play a vital role in city parks, serving as noise dampers, carbon dioxide absorbers, oxygen producers, and habitats for various types of animals. Their health status is crucial to ensure they function optimally and provide the benefits they offer. This study aims to collect data and information about the health status of trees in Taman Merdeka and Taman Toddler Park in Binjai City, North Sumatra Province.

Methodology

To assess the health status of the trees, this study uses the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method with three main indicators: productivity, damage, and tree canopy. Data collection is done through the census method in the two parks studied. The determination of tree health status is carried out using the scoring method that refers to the three indicators that have been measured.

Results

The results of this study indicate that the level of tree health in Taman Merdeka is better than the toddler garden. From the value of the health scoring obtained, only 13.9% of trees in Taman Merdeka are healthy and very healthy. Meanwhile, in a toddler park, no trees were found in healthy and very healthy status. This shows that environmental conditions in Toddler Park may require more attention, both in terms of maintenance and protection.
