Introduction

Pulmonary tuberculosis (pulmonary TB) is a global health problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It is estimated that about one third of the world population is infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes this disease. In an effort to overcome pulmonary TB, the main goal is to reduce the number of morbidity and death due to this disease. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnosis is very important. Microscopic examination of sputum to find mycobacterium tuberculosis is a general method used, but not all patients show positive results on this examination. Therefore, additional examinations are needed, such as thoracic photos, to support the diagnosis of pulmonary TB.

Background

Pulmonary TB is an infectious disease that is still a major public health concern. It is estimated that about 10 million people worldwide are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and about 1.5 million people die from this disease every year. In Indonesia, pulmonary TB is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. The main goal of pulmonary TB control is to reduce the number of morbidity and death due to this disease. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnosis is very important.

This study uses analytic methods with cross sectional design. The data analyzed originated from the medical record of patients who have been diagnosed with pulmonary TB, where they have the results of the BTA sputum examination and the thoracic photo. The data obtained are processed and analyzed using the Pearson Chi Square test, which is a statistical method to determine the relationship between two variables.

From the data analysis, the P value was 0.003. This value shows that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means there is a significant relationship between the area of the lesion in the thoracic photo image with the results of the BTA sputum examination. In other words, the greater the area of the lesion detected in the thoracic photo, the more likely the positive results of the sputum examination.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the area of radiological lesions in the thoracic photo with the results of the BTA sputum examination in pulmonary tuberculosis patients in H. Adam Malik Hospital. This finding shows the importance of using thoracic photos as an additional diagnosis that can increase the accuracy of the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.
