Introduction

Soap is one of the most essential products in people's lives, and its demand continues to rise year after year. According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data from 2016 to 2021, the need for soap has been increasing steadily. This study aims to analyze the quality of transparent solid soap using Eucalyptus Grandis leaves as an antibacterial agent for Staphylococcus aureus and determine the best formulation based on Indonesian National Standards (SNI) 3532-2016.

Soap is an essential product that plays a crucial role in maintaining personal hygiene and cleanliness. The Role of Eucalyptus Grandis Leaves in Soap Production

Eucalyptus Grandis leaves have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and have been found to possess antibacterial properties. In this study, Eucalyptus Grandis leaves were used as an antibacterial agent in the production of transparent solid soap. The leaves were extracted and added to the soap formula to enhance its antibacterial properties.

Methodology

The production of transparent solid soap using Eucalyptus Grandis leaves involved a hot process at a temperature of around 70 °C. The soap formula was analyzed for several parameters, including free fatty acids, materials that are not soluble in ethanol, water content, pH, and foam stability. The analysis was carried out to determine the feasibility of the soap and to ensure that it meets the quality standards set by SNI 3532-2016.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the best formulation for the quality of transparent solid soap was obtained in formulation 3, with the addition of 3 ml of Grandis Eucalyptus oil. The test values obtained were as follows:

Free fatty acids: 0.574%
Materials that are not soluble in ethanol: 0.594%
Water content: 14.23%
pH: 10.13%
Foam stability: 72.9167%

In addition, free alkaline was not detected, which shows that this soap is safe to use. In the hedonic test, formulation 3 also received a good preference value from panelists with a score of 4 for the aroma, color, and foam softness.

Antibacterial Activity

Although formulation 3 showed good quality, its antibacterial activity was not as effective as formulation 5. In the antibacterial activity test, formulation 5 recorded the diameter of the largest inhibition zone of 32.6 mm against the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. This shows that although formulation 3 excels in aspects of physical and organoleptic quality, formulation 5 is more effective in killing bacteria.

Conclusion

This study illustrates that the use of Eucalyptus Grandis leaves not only provides benefits as antibacterial agents but can also improve the quality of soap in terms of aesthetics and safety of its use. With the increasing public awareness of the importance of cleanliness and the need for safe and effective products, the development of natural material-based soap products such as Eucalyptus Grandis can be an attractive alternative to meet market needs.
