Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a cereal food crop that has gained popularity due to its high adaptability, easy cultivation process, and excellent resistance to pests. However, despite its advantages, sorghum plants are still vulnerable to pest attacks such as Aphids, Army Caterpillars, and Fruit Borer. The study was conducted in North Sumatra, Indonesia, from May to August 2023, using a factorial plot split design with 3 replications and 2 factors.

Methodology

The study was conducted on Jl. Let. Gen. Jamin Ginting, Namorambe District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, at an altitude of about 121 meters above sea level. The method used was a factorial plot split design with 3 replications and 2 factors. The first factor was the planting time, consisting of two treatments: T1 (2 May 2023) and T2 (May 12 2023). The second factor was nitrogen fertilization, consisting of five levels: N0 (0 kg/ha, control), N1 (55 kg/ha, 167.4 gr/plot), N2 (90 kg/ha, 274 gr/plot), N3 (125 kg/ha, 380.5 gr/plot), and N4 (160 kg/ha, 486.9 gr/plot).

Results

The results showed that the T1 planting time treatment was effective in reducing the number of Aphids pests, but had no significant effect on the intensity of armyworm attacks and the percentage of fruit borer attacks. Meanwhile, nitrogen fertilization and interactions between planting time and fertilization were not able to suppress the population of Aphids pests, grayk caterpillars, or fruit borer significantly.

The chosen planting time has the potential to affect the life cycle of pests, where in T1, environmental conditions may be more supportive to reduce Aphids activity. However, the attack of grayak caterpillars and fruit borers seems to remain high, may be caused by other factors such as humidity and temperatures that support the development of these two pests.

Although fertilization can increase plant vigor, the presence of pests is still influenced by other environmental factors that cannot be overcome only by increasing nitrogen levels.
