This study aims to analyze the relationship between the knowledge and attitudes of workers with the use of PPE in the production department of PT. Pematangsiantar City Siantar Factory in 2018.

The sample used consisted of all workers in the production department of the Sarsaparilla Limun Soda, which amounted to 40 people. Data collection methods were carried out through interviews and direct observation using a questionnaire.

The results of the analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between worker knowledge and the use of PPE, with the value of P = 0.904, which was greater than 0.05. That is, even though workers have knowledge about the importance of PPE, it does not always have an impact on their attitude in using it. Conversely, this study found a significant relationship between workers' attitudes and the use of PPE, with the value of P = 0.022, which is smaller than 0.05. This shows that the positive attitude of workers towards the use of PPE contributes to increasing their compliance in using these protective equipment.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of building a positive attitude towards the use of PPE in the work environment. Good knowledge is not enough to encourage safe action. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the company is more assertive in providing warnings and sanctions for workers who do not use PPE. A more stringent supervision through field supervisors can help ensure worker compliance. In addition, appreciation for disciplined workers using PPE needs to be given to motivate other workers. The addition of promotional media, such as posters that emphasize the importance of using PPE, can also increase worker awareness. Finally, regular counseling regarding the use and benefits of PPE will help foster a better attitude among workers.

Conclusion

The results of this study underline the importance of building a positive attitude towards the use of PPE in the work environment. The combination of appropriate knowledge and good attitude is the key to creating a safer work environment and reducing the risk of accidents in the production area. With the right steps, the company not only protects its workers, but also increases work productivity and safety as a whole.

This study has several limitations. The sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a single factory. Future studies should aim to increase the sample size and conduct the study in multiple factories to increase the generalizability of the findings.
