Method

This study is an analytical quasi-experimental study involving 40 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. The participants were divided into two groups, namely the Saline Hypertonic solution group and the group of baby shampoo solutions. Symptoms were measured using the snot-20 questionnaire and visual analog scale (VAS) before and after nasal irrigation for 2 weeks. In addition, the time of mucociliar transport was also evaluated.

Results

The results of this study showed that the average snot-20 score in the hypertonic solution group had significant improvements (p = 0.01). Conversely, for the group of baby shampoo solutions, insignificant repairs (p = 0.07) were observed. However, there were significant improvements in the average VAS score in both groups, namely hypertonic solutions (p = 0.01) and baby shampoo solution (p = 0.05). In the group of baby shampoo solution, patients with severe VAS categories decreased by 21% while patients with mild VAS categories increased by 10.5%. It is important to note that both hypertonic solutions and baby shampoo solutions did not affect mucociliar transport times.

Conclusion

Based on the results of this study, nasal irrigation using a shampoo solution of the baby has not been able to affect the quality of life and the transport time of mucociliar in chronic rhinosinusitis patients. However, nasal irrigation with this solution can have an impact on the severity of the symptoms of the disease. This shows that although it is not fully effective in improving the overall quality of life, the use of a baby shampoo solution still has benefits in reducing the symptoms felt by the patient.
