Introduction

Mangrove forests play a vital role in supporting marine ecosystems, providing a habitat for various species of fish and other marine animals, and protecting coastlines from abrasion and storms. However, the relationship between mangrove ecosystems and fisheries resources in Langsa City, Aceh Province, has been a subject of concern due to the decline in mangrove area and its impact on fisheries production. This study aims to understand the relationship between mangrove ecosystems and fisheries resources in Langsa City, Aceh Province, and to identify the strategies to increase fisheries production.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive approach and regression and correlation analysis to examine the relationship between mangrove ecosystems and fisheries resources in Langsa City, Aceh Province. Primary data was obtained from observation and interviews, while secondary data includes fish catches, information about the area of mangroves from the Maritime and Fisheries Office, Forestry, and Landsat satellite imagery.

Results

The results of this study show that between 2006 and 2016, there was an increase in mangrove area of 189.9 hectares. However, in the 2012 to 2016 period, there was a decrease in mangrove area by 84 hectares. This decline has an impact on the production of fisheries resources originating from the mangrove ecosystem. The analysis shows a significant influence between changes in mangrove forest area and fisheries resource production, which can be expressed in the regression equation y = 11.82x - 46427. Determination value (R²) which reaches 0.539 shows that around 53.9% variations in fish production can be explained by the area of the mangrove area. In addition, the correlation coefficient of 0.73 and the t value of 6.25 which is greater than T table 4 shows a strong and significant relationship.

Discussion

The findings of this study indicate that fisheries production such as fish, shrimp, and crab is strongly influenced by the area of mangrove forests. The wider the mangrove area, the higher the production of fisheries resources. This shows the importance of preserving mangrove forests for the sustainability of fisheries production that is beneficial for coastal communities.

The findings of this study indicate that fisheries production such as fish, shrimp, and crab is strongly influenced by the area of mangrove forests. Therefore, sustainable management and mangrove forest restoration programs are very necessary to maintain the positive relationship between the area of mangroves and fisheries production.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

The government, the community, and various related parties must cooperate to maintain and develop the mangrove area.
Education and training programs for fishermen about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and environmentally friendly fishing techniques must be done.
Law enforcement of illegal logging and the development of policies that support the conservation of mangrove forests must be a priority.
Sustainable management and mangrove forest restoration programs must be implemented to maintain the positive relationship between the area of mangroves and fisheries production.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the data used in this study is limited to the period of 2006 to 2016, which may not be representative of the current situation. Secondly, the study only focuses on the relationship between mangrove ecosystems and fisheries resources in Langsa City, Aceh Province, and may not be applicable to other regions. Finally, the study does not take into account the impact of other factors such as climate change, overfishing, and pollution on fisheries production.
