Stroke is one of the most deadly diseases in the world, ranking second as a cause of death and third as a cause of disability. Every year, it is estimated that around 5.5 million people die from a stroke. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia occupies the top position with a very high stroke mortality. In an effort to prevent stroke, it is essential to reduce risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of this disease, including atherosclerosis, heart disease, and metabolic disorders. Public knowledge about risk factors and stroke symptoms is one of the crucial keys in stroke prevention.

The Importance of Community Knowledge in Stroke Prevention

Public knowledge about stroke risk factors and symptoms plays a vital role in stroke prevention. When individuals have sufficient knowledge about the disease, they are more likely to take preventive measures to reduce their risk of developing stroke. This study aims to understand the relationship between the level of community knowledge and stroke risk factors in Mangga Village, Medan Tuntung District in 2020. By examining the level of public knowledge, this study expects to provide a clear picture of how far the knowledge of the community plays a role in influencing the risk of stroke.

Research Methods and Design

This study uses an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. Primary data are obtained through questionnaires and direct measurements, with the application of simple random sampling techniques for sampling. Of the total 99 respondents involved, the data collected was then analyzed using the statistical application to get accurate results. The study aims to identify the relationship between the level of community knowledge and stroke risk factors, and to determine the significance of this relationship.

Research Results and Findings

Of the 99 respondents surveyed, the majority (48.5%) has sufficient levels of knowledge about stroke, but on the other hand, high risk factors are detected at 66.7% of respondents. Through bivariate analysis, a significant relationship was found between the level of public knowledge and stroke risk factors, with a P value of 0,000. This shows that the better the level of one's knowledge about stroke, the smaller the risk they face.

The results of this study reflect the importance of health education in society. Good knowledge of stroke risk factors can not only help individuals to understand their health conditions, but also encourage healthy living behavior which can ultimately reduce the possibility of stroke. Thus, efforts to increase knowledge through educational programs about health must be the main focus, especially in areas that have a high incidence of stroke. One effective strategy is to involve local communities in health education activities, as well as supporting them in conducting regular health checks.

Stroke risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking habits can often be changed through lifestyle changes. Therefore, sufficient knowledge about this disease and the risk factors not only increase awareness, but also inspires preventive actions that can save lives. This study shows a significant relationship between the level of public knowledge and stroke risk factors. Good knowledge about stroke is an important tool to reduce the risk of this disease. Therefore, efforts to increase public knowledge through health education are very necessary as a preventive measure in overcoming the threat of stroke, especially in Mangga Village, Medan Tuntung District.
