Introduction

Domestic violence is a significant issue that affects millions of women worldwide, including in the city of Lhokseumawe. Women who experience domestic violence often face significant challenges in managing their communication privacy, which can exacerbate their situation. This study aims to analyze the communication privacy management process and the obstacles faced by women who are victims of domestic violence in the city of Lhokseumawe. With a qualitative approach and phenomenological study, this research involved six women as the main informants, chosen using Snowball Sampling techniques. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews and non-participant observations.

The Importance of Communication Privacy Management

Communication privacy management is a crucial aspect of women's lives, particularly for those who experience domestic violence. Women who are victims of domestic violence often feel trapped and isolated, and managing their communication privacy can be a significant challenge. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the communication privacy management process and the obstacles faced by women who are victims of domestic violence in the city of Lhokseumawe.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative approach and phenomenological study to analyze the communication privacy management process and the obstacles faced by women who are victims of domestic violence in the city of Lhokseumawe. Six women were chosen as the main informants using Snowball Sampling techniques. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews and non-participant observations.

Results

The results of this study showed that all informants implemented communication privacy management by considering the regulatory criteria. They tend to hide information related to domestic violence through a way of lying, avoiding, or distracting others. The hiding of this information is influenced by cultural and religious factors, which often emphasize the negative stigma of women who experience violence. Meanwhile, when there is a disclosure regarding domestic violence, this is triggered by motivation, context, and gender considerations.

Analysis of Communication Barriers

The six informants experienced significant psychological obstacles in communicating about the violence they experienced. Shame, fear, and feeling threatened are the main barriers that prevent them from opening up. Not infrequently, women feel that revealing their situation will bring worse consequences, both in terms of social and emotional. This shows how social stigma and cultural norms can limit the voices and rights of women to talk about the experience of violence they face.

Interestingly, this psychological barrier is not only experienced by women, but also felt by children of two informants in this study. The children experience fear as a result of violence that occurs at home, which shows that the cycle of domestic violence not only has an impact on direct victims, but also in the family environment as a whole.

Conclusion

This study provides a deep insight about the management of communication privacy and obstacles faced by women victims of domestic violence. Taking into account social, cultural, and psychological factors, it is essential for the community and the authorities to increase understanding and support for victims. Educating the community about women's rights and creating a supportive environment can help reduce stigma and provide ways for victims to talk and seek help. Through a more empathic approach and understanding, it is expected that the management of communication privacy for female domestic violence can be better, so they can feel safe in expressing their experiences.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the study only involved six women as the main informants, which may not be representative of all women who experience domestic violence in the city of Lhokseumawe. Secondly, the study only focused on the communication privacy management process and the obstacles faced by women who are victims of domestic violence, and did not explore other aspects of domestic violence, such as the physical and emotional impact on victims.
