Introduction

The study of soil morphology and chemical characteristics is crucial in understanding the impact of land use on soil health. Andisol soil, a type of volcanic ash soil, is widely distributed in tropical regions and is known for its high fertility and water-holding capacity. However, the effects of land use on Andisol soil characteristics are not well understood, particularly in areas with different land use practices. This study aims to investigate the morphology and chemical characteristics of Andisol soil in different land use on the North Slope of Mount Sinabung in Kuta Rakyat Village, Namanteran District, Karo Regency.

Methodology

This study was conducted in Kuta Rakyat Village, Namanteran District, Karo Regency, and involved the analysis of soil properties in the chemical and soil fertility laboratory and research and technology laboratories, the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. Three land profiles were observed and described in three different land uses: forest land (P1), annual agricultural land (P2), and seasonal agricultural land (P3). Soil samples were taken from each layer of soil profile for analysis in the laboratory. Soil analysis included soil texture, specific gravity, pH H2O, KCl pH, pH Naf, ALDD, Cation Exchange Capacity (KTK), Base saturation, zero charge point (TNM), organic content, P-available, phosphate retention, al-oksalat Dissolved (ALO), Si-oxalat dissolved (SiO), Dissolved Fe-oxalat (Feo), and Dissolved Al-Pirophosphate (ALP).

Results

The results showed that Andisol on forest land had better morphology and chemical characteristics compared to seasonal agricultural land and annual agricultural land. Land use in Andisol does not change the CTK, basic saturation, phosphate retention, and P-Avors. Land use also does not change land classification in Kuta Rakyat Village, Namanteran District, Karo Regency. Andisol in this area is classified as Fulvudand typic.

Deeper Analysis

The results of this study indicate that land use can affect the morphology and chemical characteristics of Andisol soil, although it does not change soil classification. The difference seen in Andisol in forest and agricultural land shows that human activities, such as land clearing and fertilizer use, can change the characteristics of the soil.
