This study aims to investigate the level of self-compassion and psychological well-being among final semester nursing students at the University of North Sumatra.

Self-compassion is a vital attitude that enables individuals to be gentle and understanding towards themselves, especially when dealing with difficulties. In the context of final semester students, high self-compassion can help them overcome stress and pressures related to thesis completion. Students with this ability tend to manage negative feelings more effectively and feel more satisfied with themselves. This is particularly important, as high academic demands often cause feelings of anxiety and depression among students.

Self-compassion involves treating oneself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially during times of failure or inadequacy. This study found that students with high self-compassion also had high psychological well-being. This suggests that cultivating self-compassion can help students achieve better psychological well-being, which is essential for academic success.

Methodology

This study used a questionnaire to collect data from 90 final semester nursing students at the University of North Sumatra. The questionnaire included characteristics of respondents, self-compassion questionnaires, and psychological well-being questionnaires. The sampling technique used was total sampling, with a sample size of 90 final semester students who were preparing a thesis at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra.

Results

The results showed that as many as 44 respondents (44.8%) had a moderate level of self-compassion, while 75 respondents (83.3%) had a high level of psychological well-being. This finding suggests that although most students show good psychological well-being, there is space to increase compassion between them.

Recommendations for Educational Institutions

Based on the results of the study, educational institutions, especially the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, are expected to pay more attention to the development of student compassion. Programs that are designed to improve self-compassion, such as training, seminars, or workshops, can greatly assist students in managing stress and problems they face during the end of their studies.

By creating a supportive environment, students will be more able to adapt and overcome existing challenges, so that their psychological well-being can be maintained. Thus, it is essential for students to develop self-compassion and good psychological well-being, not only to achieve academic success but also to support their mental health in the future.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of self-compassion and psychological well-being among final semester nursing students. The findings suggest that cultivating self-compassion can help students achieve better psychological well-being, which is essential for academic success. Educational institutions should pay more attention to the development of student compassion and create a supportive environment to help students navigate the challenges of their final semester.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
