Introduction

Pokahbung disease, caused by Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon, is a serious threat to sugarcane cultivation (Saccharum officinarum L.). Background

Pokahbung disease is a fungal infection that affects sugarcane plants, causing significant economic losses in sugar cane production. Methodology

Our study was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from April to September 2016. We used a nonfactorial complete random design (RAL) with six treatments and four replications. The treatments applied included immersion at normal temperatures for 50 minutes (as a positive control), soaking with fungicide for 15 minutes, and immersion at 40 ° C, 45 ° C, 50 ° C, and 55 ° C for 40, 30, 20, and 10 minutes in sequence. The parameters observed in this study included the percentage of disease events, the severity of the disease, and plant height.

Results

Our results showed that immersion at a temperature of 50 ° C for 20 minutes can slow the incidence of pokahbung disease, while soaking at 45 ° C for 30 minutes can significantly suppress the severity of the disease. This finding provides important insight into the management of diseases in sugarcane cultivation, especially in designing a treatment strategy that can reduce the use of chemical fungicides that have the potential to damage the environment.

Pokahbung disease often results in significant economic losses in sugar cane production. The use of environmentally friendly control methods such as immersion at a certain temperature is an interesting alternative. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of soaking temperature in cane bud chips in suppressing Pokahbung disease. The results of this study also show that this immersion method can be a more environmentally friendly solution compared to the use of chemical fungicides. By reducing dependence on chemicals, farmers can produce sugar cane in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way, thus contributing to agricultural sustainability. Therefore, research on the effectiveness of this immersion temperature makes a significant contribution to the development of agricultural technology that is more sustainable and effective in controlling plant diseases, especially in sugar cane cultivation.
