The Effect of Weight of Pinang Fruit Skin Fiber as a Filler on the Characterization of the Fiber Board Using Polypropylene Which is Craftsmen Maleat Anhydrous
Introduction
The use of natural fibers as fillers in composite materials has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to replace synthetic fibers and reduce the environmental impact of traditional materials. One such natural fiber is the skin of the betel nut, which has been used as a filler in various composite materials. However, the effect of the weight of the betel nut fiber on the characterization of the fiber board using polypropylene which is craftsmen maleat anhydrous has not been extensively studied. This research aims to investigate the effect of the weight of the betel nut fiber as a filler on the characterization of the fiber board using polypropylene which is craftsmen maleat anhydrous.
Materials and Methods
The research was conducted in three stages: alkalinization, functionalization of polypropylene with anhydrous maleat, and the process of printing the fiber board. The fiber board produced from polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PP-G-MA) was then analyzed to determine the degree of grafting, melting point, and FT-IR analysis. The physical and mechanical analysis of the fiber board was based on SNI 03-4449-2006 standards, which include density, water content, swelling, broken modulus, modulus of elasticity, and morphological analysis of fiber board using SEM.
Results
The results of the mechanical analysis of specimen V, consisting of betel nut fibers: PP: PP-G-MA: BPO: DVB in composition (50: 40: 20: 2: 2: 10), indicates that the fiber board has optimum results. All physical properties of measured meets the quality standards of the particle board, with an elasticity modulus value (MOE) of 35002.01 kgf/cm² and a broken modulus (MOR) of 186.67 kgf/cm². The SEM analysis shows the strengthening of fiber on the fiber board, which contributes to increasing endurance and strength of the board.
Discussion
The increase in the weight of the skin of the betel nut as a filler can improve the physical and mechanical properties of the fiber board produced. This is because the betel nut fiber acts as a reinforcement, increasing the strength and durability of the fiber board. The SEM analysis shows the strengthening of fiber on the fiber board, which contributes to increasing endurance and strength of the board. Therefore, this research not only provides insight into the potential of betel nuts as an environmentally friendly filler, but also opens opportunities for innovation in making composite materials that are stronger and more efficient.
Conclusion
The use of betel nuts as raw material in making polypropylene-based fiber boards can be an attractive alternative in the building material industry. In addition, with the increasing need for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, this research can have a positive impact on the development of biomaterial-based products in the future. The results of this research can be used as a reference for further research on the use of natural fibers as fillers in composite materials.
