The Effect of Solvent Polarity Type on the Formation of the Copolymer of Acid Acid Graft with Polypropylene Film

Introduction

The development of new materials with specific properties has become increasingly important in various industries, including biomaterials, coatings, and more. One of the key factors that influence the properties of these materials is the type of solvent used in the graft copolymerization process. In this study, we explored the effect of different types of solvents on the formation of acrylic acid graft copolymers with polypropylene films. Our research aimed to investigate how the polarity of the solvent affects the efficiency of copolymer formation and the characteristics of the products produced.

Materials and Methods

In this study, polypropylene films measuring 5 x 5 cm were reacted with acrylic acid using fenton reagent (H2O2/Fe2+) as an initiator in the atmosphere of nitrogen gas at 28 ° C. We used three different solvents: distilled water, ethanol, and methanol. The results of the graft copolymerization were then analyzed through grafting percent, water absorption capability, and FTIR spectrum.

Results

Our results showed that different solvents had a significant impact on the efficiency of copolymer formation. The highest grafting percent was recorded in the distilled water solvent, with a value of 32,4972%. This indicates that the solvent polarity affects the grafting reaction between acrylic acid and polypropylene. In this case, water, which has high polarity, has proven effective in increasing interactions between monomers and polymers, resulting in better grafts.

Conversely, the highest water absorption ability was obtained when using ethanol solvents, with a value of 4.53%. This shows that ethanol, despite having lower polarity compared to water, still contributes to increasing the interaction and ability of the hydrophilic of the Copolymers formed. These results are important for practical applications from Copolymer Graft, especially in fields that require high hydrophilic properties.

FTIR Analysis

Through FTIR analysis, we observed changes in chemical structures in polypropylene films after grafting with acrylic acid. This change indicates that the grafting reaction has been successful and the structure produced has the potential to be applied in various fields, including biomaterials, coatings, and other applications.

Discussion

Our study provides new insights on how the type of solvent affects the graft copolymerization process and the characteristics of the products produced. The results of this study show that the solvent polarity plays a crucial role in the efficiency of copolymer formation and the properties of the products produced. The use of distilled water as a solvent resulted in the highest grafting percent, while the use of ethanol resulted in the highest water absorption ability.
