Introduction

The loss of teeth in Indonesia continues to increase every year, creating big challenges in the field of dental and oral health. The demand for denture bases is high, but the raw materials used to make them are often expensive. In recent years, researchers have been exploring alternative materials to reduce costs and improve the quality of dentures. One such material is chicken eggshells, which are rich in minerals and have a strong structure. This study aims to determine the effect of adding nanoparticles of chicken eggshells as fillers on the mechanical properties of denture bases.

Background

Denture bases are made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a type of acrylic resin. However, PMMA has limitations in terms of its mechanical properties, which can affect the durability and quality of dentures. To improve the mechanical properties of PMMA, researchers have been exploring the use of fillers, such as nanoparticles of chicken eggshells. Chicken eggshells are a waste material that is often discarded, but they have a high mineral content and a strong structure, making them an ideal candidate for use as a filler.

Methodology

In this study, the base of the denture was made using PMMA as a matrix and nanoparticles of the chicken eggshell as a filler. The nanoparticles isolation process of eggshells was carried out by sonication treatment for 45 minutes, followed by filtration using a dialysis membrane. Denture base products were produced by mixing nanoparticles of the eggshell with a PMMA matrix consisting of powder and liquid, with a weight ratio of 2:1. The matrix and filler ratio used in this study was 100%:0%, 90%:10%, 80%:20%, and 70%:30%.

The mixture of the dough was poured into a mold made of cuvette. The cuvette was then boiled at 75°C for 90 minutes, then the temperature was raised to 100°C and left for 30 minutes. After the process, the denture base sample was removed from the mold. The resulting sample was then analyzed using various techniques such as TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared).

Results

The results of the mechanical properties showed that the elastic modulus (MOE) showed the best results in the addition of 10% fillers with a value of 2,571 GPA, while the broken modulus (MOR) reached the best value in the addition of 10% of the fillers with 48.859 MPa. In addition, the best impact power was also recorded in the addition of 10% of the fillers, reaching 196,898 J/mm².

Discussion

The results of this study provide a deeper understanding of the potential utilization of chicken eggshells as fillers in making denture bases. With increased mechanical properties, the addition of nanoparticles of chicken eggshells can not only reduce production costs, but also improve the quality and durability of dentures. The optimal mechanical properties in the addition of 10% of the fillers show that there is a good balance between the PMMA matrix and nanoparticles of the chicken eggshell. If the number of fillers is too small, the effect of strengthening is not optimal. Conversely, if too much, can affect the process of formation and material integration. Therefore, the right filler ratio is very important to ensure the quality of the quality.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has shown that the addition of nanoparticles of chicken eggshells as fillers can improve the mechanical properties of denture bases. The optimal mechanical properties were achieved in the addition of 10% of the fillers, which showed a good balance between the PMMA matrix and nanoparticles of the chicken eggshell. This study contributes to the dental and oral health sector by providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution for making denture bases. Furthermore, this research supports sustainability efforts by utilizing existing resources more effectively.

Through this development, it is hoped that there will be further innovations in the materials and technology used for making dentures, which in turn can improve the quality of life of people who experience teeth loss.
