Introduction

Language contact is a universal phenomenon that causes the mutual influence between one language and another, or between various languages. This study examines the influence of the language environment on the mastery of standard Indonesian (BIB) students majoring in foreign language FBS Unimed. The study aims to discuss the level of mastery of students' BIB, the percentage of the influence of the language environment on BIB mastery, as well as the level of endurance of BIB mastery on these influences.

Background of the Study

Language contact is a natural phenomenon that occurs when speakers of different languages interact with each other. This interaction can lead to language interference, where speakers borrow words, phrases, or grammatical structures from one language and incorporate them into their native language. In the case of Indonesian language, language contact can occur with English, regional languages, and other non-standard variations.

The mastery of standard Indonesian (BIB) is crucial for effective communication in Indonesia. However, the language environment can influence the quality of student BIB mastery. Students are often exposed to non-standard sentences in their surrounding environment, which can affect their ability to identify and use standard language.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach to collect data from 60 students majoring in foreign language FBS Unimed. The data was collected through a test consisting of 50 sentences, with 25 sentences of which are non-taku sentences. Students were asked to choose which sentences are standard and which are non-tumen. The data was then analyzed to understand the durability of the mastery of BIB and the influence of the language environment.

Results

The results showed that language contact in the speakers of discussed cause language interference. One of the main factors that affect the quality of student BIB mastery is the language environment. Students are often influenced by non-my non-sentences in the surrounding environment. The average score for the choice of standard sentences is 18.42, while the choice of non-standard sentences is 12.25. The percentage of durability of student BIB mastery reached 62.3%, while the influence of the language environment was 37.7%.

Discussion

These results indicate that students are still vulnerable to the influence of the language environment and still have difficulty identifying non-standard forms that are influenced by English, regional languages, and other non-standard variations. The durability of BIB mastery is not only determined by internal factors such as knowledge and understanding of language rules, but also by external factors such as the language environment.

The language environment that is rich in the use of standard language will help students increase the durability of BIB's mastery. Therefore, there needs to be an effort to improve the quality of the language environment around students, for example by:

Increasing awareness of the importance of the use of standard Indonesian language. This can be done through seminar programs, workshops, and socialization regarding Indonesian grammar.
Creating a more interactive and interesting learning program. The use of varied and technology-based learning media can help students better understand and apply Indonesian rules.
Improving the quality of Indonesian language teaching in tertiary institutions. Improving the quality of teaching can be done by providing training for lecturers and improving the Indonesian language curriculum standards.

Conclusion

With structured and sustainable efforts, it is expected that students of FBS Unimed Foreign Language Department can increase the resistance of standard mastery of Indonesian language and become an example for other language users. The study highlights the importance of language environment in influencing the mastery of standard Indonesian language and suggests ways to improve the quality of language environment around students.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on students majoring in foreign language FBS Unimed, and the results may not be generalizable to other students. Secondly, the study only used a quantitative approach, and a qualitative approach may provide more in-depth insights into the language environment and its influence on BIB mastery.
