Introduction

Malaria is a significant public health concern in many parts of the world, including North Sumatra Province in Indonesia. The disease is caused by a parasite that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. In this study, we aim to build a mathematical model that can identify the potential risk factors for malaria in North Sumatra using logistics regression models.

Background

Malaria is a major public health problem in North Sumatra, with a high incidence rate and significant morbidity and mortality. The disease is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The parasite has several species, including Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium malariae, each with different characteristics and severity of symptoms.

Methodology

This study used secondary data obtained from the North Sumatra Provincial Health Office. A total of 368 patient data became a sample in this study. The data included information on the patient's age, sex, occupation, transmission classification, and parasitic type. The response variable was a binary variable, indicating whether the patient had malaria or not. The predictor variables were also binary variables, indicating the presence or absence of each of the five variables mentioned above.

To model the risk factors that affect the spread of malaria, binary logistics regression methods were used. The parameter estimation was carried out using the maximum possible estimation method. The model was then evaluated using a classification accuracy test, which measures the proportion of correctly classified observations.

Results

The results of the study showed that two of the five predictor variables studied had a significant influence on the response variable. The two variables were age and transmission classification. The model produced had a classification accuracy level of 92.4%, indicating that it was a reliable model for predicting malaria risk.

Discussion

The binary logistics regression model is an effective statistical technique for analyzing data with a dichotomy response variable, in this case, the event of malaria. By conducting this analysis, researchers can identify risk factors that have the potential to cause malaria, which is very important for efforts to prevent and control this disease.

These results not only contribute to the development of science and public health but also become a basis for health policies in mitigating malaria in North Sumatra.

Based on the results of this study, we recommend that health authorities in North Sumatra focus on intervention efforts to the factors that are more influential, such as age and transmission classification. This can include targeted public health campaigns to raise awareness about the risks of malaria and the importance of prevention and control measures.

We also recommend that further research be conducted to identify other potential risk factors for malaria in North Sumatra, such as environmental and socioeconomic factors. Limitations

This study had several limitations. The data used was secondary data obtained from the North Sumatra Provincial Health Office, which may not be representative of the entire population. In addition, the study only included five predictor variables, which may not be exhaustive. Further research is needed to identify other potential risk factors for malaria in North Sumatra.
