Introduction

Being a scholar is the dream of many people, including diploma students. However, what factors encourage them to continue their studies to a higher level? Does all diploma students have the same desire? To answer these questions, a study uses the technique of Decision Tree and Support Vector Machine to analyze data from Diploma Students at the Tunas Bangsa Management and Information Academy, Pematangsiantar.

This study aims to build prediction models that can predict the desire of diploma students to continue their studies to undergraduate levels in private tertiary institutions. This model is expected to help private universities in designing more effective new student recruitment strategies.

Methodology

Data used in this study was collected from the Tunas Bangsa Management and Information Academy Database, as well as the results of a survey of 200 fourth semester students in 2009 and 2010. The factors studied include:

Confidence

How confidently students are towards their ability to continue their studies to undergraduate levels. Confidence is a crucial factor in determining a student's decision to continue their studies. Students who are confident in their abilities are more likely to pursue higher education.

Parental Support

Learning Behavior

How active and effective students in learning during the diploma level. Learning behavior is an essential factor in a student's decision to continue their studies. Students who are active and effective in their learning are more likely to pursue higher education.

Study Duration

Long time needed by students to complete diploma studies. Study duration is a critical factor in determining a student's decision to continue their studies. Students who take longer to complete their diploma studies may be less likely to pursue higher education.

Decision Tree Analysis

Using Algorithm Decision Tree C4.5, this study succeeded in building a prediction model that shows the desire of diploma students to continue their studies to undergraduate levels. The model shows that the most dominant factor that influences the desire of diploma students to continue their studies is Confidence, which contributed 79.8% to the decision.

Support Vector Machine Analysis

Besides Decision Tree, this research also uses the technique Support Vector Machine to test and validate the prediction model produced. This technique allows research to see how the prediction model can predict the desires of diploma students more accurately.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study indicate that self-confidence plays an important role in encouraging diploma students to continue their studies to undergraduate levels. This shows that private universities need to focus more on efforts to build confidence in diploma students, through motivational and guidance programs right.

Conclusion

This research provides an important contribution in understanding the factors that encourage diploma students to continue their studies to undergraduate levels. The results of this study can be used by private universities to design more effective new student recruitment strategies and increase the chances of diploma students to achieve their goals.

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on diploma students at the Tunas Bangsa Management and Information Academy, Pematangsiantar. Secondly, the study only used data from 2009 and 2010. Thirdly, the study only used a limited number of factors to predict the desire of diploma students to continue their studies.
