Characterization of Protection of SAE 10W-30 Lubricant Wear Protection with the addition of MOS2 additive nano as a modification of friction

Introduction

The use of lubricants in engines is crucial to reduce wear and tear, increase efficiency, and prolong the lifespan of the engine. SAE 10W-30 lubricant is a widely used lubricant in various engines due to its excellent lubricating properties. However, the wear protection of this lubricant can be improved by adding nano additives, such as MOS2. This study aims to investigate the effect of adding MOS2 nano additives to SAE 10W-30 lubricant on its wear protection and friction reduction.

Lubricants play a vital role in reducing friction and wear between moving parts in engines. Methodology

This study used Sodium Dodesil Sulfate (SDS) surfactants to prevent the deposition or clumping of Nano MOS2 particles when the engine is cold. The optimal composition of Nano additives MOS2 was found at a concentration of 0.1% and SDS 0.2%% (WT%), which was produced from composition variations in 12 different samples. Testing was carried out using two instruments, namely testing the diameter of the disc (fourball scar diameter) and HFRR (High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig) testing.

Results

The results of the test diameter of the disc showed that without nano additives, the diameter of the former disc was 0.31 mm, while with nano additives, the diameter of the former disc decreased to 0.26 mm. This showed an increase of 16% in the protection of the former disc. HFRR testing on wear and wear showed significant results. Without nano additives, the value of the wear of wear was 167.5 μm, while with nano additives, the value of former wear dropped to 96 μm, or a decrease of 42.7%. This indicated that the addition of MOS2 additives effectively reduced wear and wear on the friction surface.
