Vetivera Response (Vetirian Zizanioides Linn.) To Soil Salinity Based on Morphophysiological Characteristics

Introduction

Soil salinity is a major environmental stress that affects plant growth and productivity worldwide. It is estimated that over 20% of the world's arable land is affected by salinity, resulting in significant losses in crop yields and agricultural productivity. In this context, the search for plants that can tolerate high levels of salinity has become a priority for agricultural research. One such plant is vetivera grass (Vetirian Zizanioides Linn.), which is known for its good resistance to extreme environmental conditions, including high salinity.

This study aims to determine the effect of salinity on the morphophysiological characteristics of vetivera grass and to determine the optimal level of salinity for the growth of this plant based on these characteristics. The study was conducted from June 2021 to December 2021 in the Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Network Culture, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, as well as in Greenhouse and Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra.

Research Methodology

The research design used in this study is a complete random design (DAC) with salinity treatment 0, 640, 1280, 1920, 2560, 3200, 3840, 4480, 5120, 5760, and 6400 ppm. The study was conducted in a controlled environment, where the plants were exposed to different levels of salinity and their morphophysiological characteristics were measured and recorded.

Results

The results of the study showed that soil salinity had a significant impact on the relative growth rate variable between the 4MSP-5MSP and 5MSP-6MSP phases. However, the responses of several variables such as plant height, number of clumps, number of leaves, root length, root biomass, shoot biomass, shoots and roots, as well as chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, total chlorophyll, and water use efficiency (EPA) do not show differences which is significant due to soil salinity.

Discussion

The results of the study indicate that vetivera grass is able to adapt to the treatment of soil salinity from 0 ppm to 6400 ppm, as evidenced through its morphophysiological characteristics. This shows that vetivera can take advantage of unfavorable conditions to survive and continue to grow. One of the main reasons why vetivera can adapt well is its ability to develop a deep and broad root system, which allows better access to resources, such as water and nutrients.

This plant also has a physiological mechanism that helps in managing stress salinity, such as ion accumulation that can reduce the negative effects of soil salt. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that soil salinity not only affects the relative growth rate of plants but can also be an important indicator for plant management in saline conditions.

Overall, this research provides valuable insights on the ability to adapt vetivera grass in saline conditions, as well as the importance of further research to explore the potential of this plant in the management of sustainable agricultural land. With its impressive morphophysiological characteristics, vetivera can be an alternative solution in facing agricultural challenges in areas with high salinity.
