Introduction

Retirement is a significant phase in the life of a worker, including retired oil palm plantation workers at PTPN IV. This study aims to explore the effect of social capital on the physical and mental health of retirees. Social capital here includes social networks and relationships between individuals who can support the welfare of retirees.

Physical and mental health becomes a crucial issue when retiring. Many retirees face serious health problems, both physically such as chronic diseases, and mental diseases such as depression. Research shows that a number of retirees must fight against disease, thus creating a challenge to maintain a balance between physical and mental health. Not infrequently, retirees experience mental pressure due to shifts from active work life to a calmer life. However, there are also retirees who feel improved health after retirement, thanks to the loss of workload and pressure they faced before. Social networks that are formed through friendship and interaction with fellow retirees, provide great emotional support, helps them find back happiness and the purpose of life.

Social networks play a significant role in maintaining the physical and mental health of retirees. A strong social network can provide emotional support, help retirees find back happiness and the purpose of life. Social networks can also help retirees access health services, which is essential for maintaining their physical and mental health. Research has shown that social networks can have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of retirees.

Methodology

To explore this issue, this research applies a quantitative approach and uses the Short Form (SF) -36 questionnaire as a data collection instrument. This questionnaire is designed to consider the condition of the Indonesian people, so that the results obtained can be more relevant and applicable. The focus of this research is in two aspects of social capital: structural and cognitive. The study was conducted in two locations, namely P3RI Medan City and Perbaungan District.

Results

The results showed a significant correlation between social capital and physical health, with a correlation value of 0.682, and between social capital and mental health which reached 0.434. Meanwhile, the correlation between social capital and access to health services reaches 0.761, shows that social capital plays an important role in supporting the accessibility of health services for retirees. The t test shows that there is a difference in average between structural and cognitive social capital, with sig values. (2-tailed) of 0.000. This finding shows that mental health can affect physical health, especially when the physical condition of retirees weakens.

The Role of Family in Maintaining Retirement Health

The family also plays an important role in maintaining the balance of retirement health. Emotional support from the family can be a determining factor in overcoming stress and maintaining a spirit of life. Therefore, the strengthening of social networks, both through a retired community or interaction with family, is needed to create an environment that supports better health.

Conclusion

Through this research, it is expected to provide more insight into the importance of social capital in maintaining physical and mental health of retired oil palm plantations. This also emphasizes the need for more attention from related parties to create programs that support retirees in building strong social networks and better access to health services.
