Introduction

In this study, we investigated the synthesis of Schiff bases through the condensation of phenylhydrazine with furfural obtained from corn cobs and their use as inhibitors of zinc metal corrosion (Zn).

Schiff Base Synthesis from Furfural and Phenylhydrazine

Schiff base synthesis is carried out through a condensation reaction between furfural obtained from corn cobs with phenylhydrazine. The results of this furfural are analyzed using the FT-IR spectroscopy, which indicates the presence of vibration peak C = O in the area of about 1674 cm-1. Furthermore, furfural is condensed by phenylhydrazine through the reflux method in ethanol solvents for one hour. Of the 9.6 grams (0.1 mol) furfural obtained, condensed with 5.4 grams (0.05 mol) phenylhidrazine, producing 10.54 grams (67.02%) Schiff base. FT-IR analysis of this Schiff base shows the vibration of C = N in the area around 1597 cm-1.

Characterization and Analysis of Schiff Base

The presence of vibration peaks C = O and C = N indicates the formation of the Schiff base structure. As for furfural and phenylhydrazine at the same concentration, efficiency is obtained at 58.18% and 50.04%.

Lower efficiency of furfural and phenylhydrazine of 58.18% and 50.04% shows that the structure of condensation compounds has an important role in increasing the ability of corrosion inhibition.
