Mangroves are unique ecosystems that have adapted to extreme environmental conditions, allowing them to produce secondary metabolites as chemical defense for their survival. One of the secondary metabolites produced by mangroves is polyisoprenoid, whose function is still not fully understood. In this study, we aim to analyze the growth of S. Alba seeds in response to variations of shade and salinity concentration, as well as its effect on the concentration of long chain polyisoprenoids.

Research Purposes

The purpose of this study is to investigate the growth of S. Alba seeds in response to the variation of shade and salinity concentration, as well as its effect on the concentration of long chain polyisoprenoids. This study was conducted from August to December 2014 using a complete random factorial experimental design, with a shade treatment of 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% and salinity levels 0%, 1.5%, and 3%. Research Methods

Alba seeds is the most optimal occurs in the treatment of 0% shade and 3% salinity, with growth results reaching 100%, height of 2.6 cm, diameter of 0.17 mm, fresh weight of 0.113 g, dry weight Root 0.08 g, wet weight of shoots 0.15 g, dry weight of shoots 0.05 g, number of leaves 4, and shoot ratio to root 0.59. The results of this study provide valuable information on the growth and metabolism of S. Alba seeds and highlight the importance of polyisoprenoids in adaptation to the environment.

Results and Discussion

The measured polyisoprenoid content reaches 190.5 ml in the leaves and 133.4 ml in the roots in the 0% shade treatment and 3% salinity. However, in the treatment of 75% shade with 3% salinity, the polyisoprenoid content in the leaves reached 185.2 ml and 231.9 ml in the roots. This finding shows that polysoprenoids may play an important role in the adaptation of plants to the intensity of the available light. Especially, the concentration of polyisoprenoids increases with the reduced intensity of light in S. Alba seeds. This study provides valuable information on the role of polyisoprenoids in adaptation to the environment and highlights the importance of further research on this topic.

Conclusion

This study shows that Mangrove S. Alba has a good adaptability to variations of shade and salinity. The results not only provide insight into the growth and metabolism of this plant but also highlighted the important role of polyisoprenoids in adaptation to the environment.
