Introduction

Medan City, as one of the major cities in North Sumatra, has experienced rapid growth in the use of the internet. This growth is accompanied by an increase in demand for faster and more stable internet services, such as Speedy Internet. The demand for Speedy Internet has become a crucial aspect of modern life, enabling individuals to access information, communicate with others, and conduct various online activities. However, the factors that affect the demand for Speedy Internet in Medan City are not well understood. This study aims to reveal the factors that affect the demand for Speedy Internet in Medan City.

Background

The rapid growth of the internet in Medan City has been driven by various factors, including the increasing use of mobile devices, the expansion of internet infrastructure, and the growing demand for online services. The demand for Speedy Internet has become a critical aspect of modern life, enabling individuals to access information, communicate with others, and conduct various online activities. However, the factors that affect the demand for Speedy Internet in Medan City are not well understood.

Methodology

This study used secondary data in the form of time series data for six years (2004-2009) obtained from various sources, such as the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Medan, PT. Telkom, Library, Journal, and previous research results. The data includes population per capita income, population growth, and price as an independent variable which is believed to affect the demand for internet speedy as a dependent variable.

Results

The results of this study showed that the population per capita income had a positive influence, but was not significant on the demand for family packages. That is, an increase in income per capita does encourage internet demand, but the effect is not so large. On the other hand, population growth has a positive and significant influence on speedy internet demand, especially family packages. This shows that the more residents in the city of Medan, the higher the demand for fast internet services. The price factor turned out to have a negative and significant influence on speedy internet demand, especially family packages. That is, the higher the internet price, the lower the demand for this service.

Analysis and Implications

The results of this study have important implications for internet service providers in Medan, especially PT. Telkom. The findings suggest that PT. Telkom can focus on developing an internet package that suits the needs of users in various income segments. This can be achieved by offering different packages with varying speeds and prices to cater to the needs of different users. Additionally, PT. Telkom needs to consider population growth and target marketing strategies to increase market penetration. This can be achieved by identifying areas with high population growth and targeting marketing efforts towards these areas.

Conclusion

This study concluded that the income per capita population, population growth, and price are important factors that affect the demand for internet speedy in the city of Medan. PT. Telkom needs to understand the dynamics of these three factors to formulate effective and sustainable business strategies in Medan. The findings of this study can be used by PT. Telkom to develop targeted marketing strategies, improve product offerings, and optimize pricing to meet the needs of users in Medan.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Product Development Strategy: PT. Telkom can focus on developing an internet package that suits the needs of users in various income segments.
Marketing Strategy: PT. Telkom needs to consider population growth and target marketing strategies to increase market penetration.
Price Strategy: PT. Telkom needs to balance the price and demand, while still paying attention to competitive factors and profitability.

Limitations

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study used secondary data, which may not be comprehensive or up-to-date. Secondly, the study focused on a specific city, Medan, and may not be generalizable to other cities. Finally, the study did not consider other factors that may affect the demand for Speedy Internet, such as education level, occupation, and age.

This study provides a foundation for future research on the demand for Speedy Internet in Medan City. Future studies can build on the findings of this study by exploring other factors that may affect the demand for Speedy Internet, such as education level, occupation, and age.
