Introduction
Population growth is a critical factor in determining the development of a region . In North Sumatra, Indonesia, understanding the population growth rate is essential for planning and implementing policies that support sustainable and quality population growth. This study aims to predict population growth rates and population in North Sumatra Province in 2019 using an exponential method. The results of this study will provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to make informed decisions about population growth and development planning.
Methodology
The study employed a library research method and data collection techniques through the recording of time series . Secondary data from the 2007 to 2016 period obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and various journal sources and other research results were used. The data were then processed using an exponential method to get a population forecast and calculate the population growth rate with the geometric and exponential growth formula.
The exponential growth formula is a mathematical model that describes the growth of a population over time . It is given by the equation:

where P(t) is the population at time t, P0 is the initial population, e is the base of the natural logarithm, r is the growth rate, and t is time.
The geometric growth formula is a simpler model that assumes a constant growth rate . It is given by the equation:

where P(t) is the population at time t, P0 is the initial population, r is the growth rate, and t is time.
Results
The results of the analysis show that the average population growth every year over the last decade is at 1.09% . By using the exponential growth formula, researchers can calculate the percentage of changes in population based on sex, namely men and women. The projection obtained showed that in 2019, the male population was estimated to reach 7,462,490 people, while the number of female population was estimated to reach 7,461,957 people. Thus, the total population in North Sumatra that year is estimated to reach 14,923,547 people.
Furthermore, the rate of population growth in North Sumatra in 2019 is estimated at 1.62% . The decline in the rate of population growth can be used as an indicator of success in creating balanced population growth and quality families. This is in line with the objectives of the KKBPK (Family Planning and Family Development Population), which is committed to designing programs that support sustainable and quality population growth.
Impact Analysis and Implications
Good measured population growth is very important for the development of public policy and development planning in an area . By knowing the projected population, the local government can prepare a variety of public services needed, ranging from infrastructure, education, health, to community empowerment programs. In the context of North Sumatra, which has a large cultural diversity and economic potential, careful planning is very necessary to ensure that all levels of society benefit from the economic growth produced.
In facing challenges such as urbanization and increasing birth rates, policies that support gender equality and strengthen the family system will be very crucial . It is hoped that, with the implementation of data-based programs, the results resulting from this exponential method, North Sumatra Province can achieve higher quality and sustainable population growth.
Thus, the application of exponential methods is not just an analytical tool, but also becomes a basis for broader strategic steps in harmonious and balanced community development . Community involvement in planned programs is also very important to achieve this goal, so that every individual feels involved and has a share in the development process.

In conclusion, the application of exponential methods to project population growth in North Sumatra in 2019 has provided valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders .
