Introduction

The increasing use of plastic materials in various sectors of life has led to a significant rise in plastic waste production. This growing plastic waste poses a substantial threat to the environment, and it is essential to find innovative solutions to mitigate this issue. One promising method is pyrolysis, which can convert plastic waste into energy. This study aims to analyze the performance of reactors in pyrolysis that process plastic waste and rice husk, with the goal of increasing oil yield and understanding the characteristics of processed products.

Methodology

Three types of plastic waste were tested in this study, including plastic cups of mineral water (P1), mulch plastic (P2), and burlap sack plastic (P3). Each type of plastic was mixed with rice husk in three mass variations, namely 8 kg (m1), 9 kg (m2), and 10 kg (m3). The parameters observed in this study include yields, reactor temperatures, and oil characteristics produced.

Experimental Design

The experimental design used in this study is a complete random design (RAL) with two factors. The two factors are the type of plastic waste and the mass of rice husk used. The three types of plastic waste tested in this study are plastic cups of mineral water (P1), mulch plastic (P2), and burlap sack plastic (P3). Each type of plastic is mixed with rice husk in three mass variations, namely 8 kg (m1), 9 kg (m2), and 10 kg (m3). The experimental design is shown in the following table:

Results

The results of this study showed that the highest yield was achieved by oil from burlap sack plastic (P3M1) of 13.01%, while the lowest yield was obtained from mulch plastic (P2M1) which only reached 0.65%. The pyrolysis process shows that the oil begins to drip when the reactor temperature is between 81.6 ° C to 95.2 ° C. The highest temperature recorded during the study was 162 ° C, which was achieved in 222 minutes (3.7 hours) when using a mass husk mass of 8 kg.

Physical Characteristics of Oil

The physical characteristics of the oil produced in this study were also analyzed. The results showed that the highest density of oil is found in mineral water plastic (P1M3) which is 0.80 gr/ml, while the lowest density is in oil from burlap plastic (P3M3) which is 0.73 gr/ml. Both of these values are still in the range of density of kerosene fuel which usually ranges from 0.78-0.81 gr/ml. For thickness, oil from mineral water plastic has the highest value of 1.09 cp, while oil from goning sack plastic has the lowest value of 0.63 CP, which is close to the viscosity of gasoline fuel which is around 0.652 CP.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of pyrolysis that processes plastic waste and rice husk provides good potential for energy conversion. The yield and physical characteristics of the oil produced varies depending on the type of plastic waste and mass of rice husk used. This research opens opportunities for further development in processing plastic waste into alternative energy that is more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
