Introduction

Kelurahan Junjuan, Medan Marelan District, has been identified as a location for research on increasing the income of mustard greens (Brassica Juncea L.). This research was conducted by Putri Dian Sari Damanik (130304012 / Agribusiness) in January 2017 using the Purposive method. The primary objective of this study is to identify the factors that influence the income of mustard greens in the region and determine the right strategy to increase their income.

The Importance of Increasing Income for Mustard Greens Farmers

Mustard greens are a crucial crop for many farmers in Kelurahan Junjuan, providing a significant source of income for their families. However, the income generated from mustard greens is often limited, and farmers struggle to make ends meet. The more experienced and the area of land owned, the higher the income achieved. This is because experienced farmers are better equipped to manage their land and make informed decisions about crop management, leading to higher yields and better quality produce. Similarly, farmers with larger land areas can produce more mustard greens, increasing their income.

On the other hand, age and education level do not have a significant influence on income. This suggests that experience and land area are more critical factors in determining income than age and education level. Multiple linear regression analysis shows that overall, all independent variables (education, experience, age, and land area) have a significant influence on the income of mustard greens.

Income Increase Strategy: Focus on Growth

Based on the results of SWOT analysis, this study recommends the application of a growth-oriented strategy to increase the income of mustard greens in the village. This strategy emphasizes efforts to increase production and market expansion. Some concrete steps that can be done are:

Optimizing Land and Climate Conditions

Improving land quality through good soil treatment, the use of organic fertilizer, and efficient irrigation systems is essential to increase production. Adapting aquaculture techniques that are in accordance with climatic conditions in the region can also help to increase yields and improve the quality of mustard greens.

Increasing Access to Labor and Raw Materials

Facilitating access to skilled workers through training and internship programs can help to increase production and improve the quality of mustard greens. Ensuring the availability of quality and affordable raw materials, such as seeds and fertilizers, is also crucial to support the growth of the mustard greens industry.

Development of Farmers' Expertise and Professionalism

Increasing the knowledge and skills of farmers through training and counseling programs can help to improve their capabilities and increase their income. Providing access to the latest information about mustard greens and market technology can also help farmers to stay competitive and adapt to changing market conditions.

Market Development

Building partnerships with collectors and distributors of harvests can help to increase market access and improve the price of mustard greens. Encouraging product diversification, such as mustard greens into processed products, can also help to increase revenue and improve the income of farmers.

Increasing the income of mustard greens in the village of Kelurahan Junjuan requires an integrated strategy that combines increased production and market expansion. With a focus on the growth and development of farmers' capabilities, it is hoped that the income of mustard greens in the region can increase significantly and open up opportunities for prosperity for the community in the village.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

The government and local authorities should provide support to farmers in Kelurahan Junjuan by providing training and counseling programs to improve their knowledge and skills.
The availability of quality and affordable raw materials, such as seeds and fertilizers, should be ensured to support the growth of the mustard greens industry.
Partnerships between farmers and collectors and distributors of harvests should be built to increase market access and improve the price of mustard greens.
Product diversification, such as mustard greens into processed products, should be encouraged to increase revenue and improve the income of farmers.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size was limited to 100 farmers in Kelurahan Junjuan, which may not be representative of the entire region. Secondly, the study only focused on the factors that influence income and did not explore other factors that may affect the income of mustard greens farmers. Finally, the study only provided recommendations for increasing income and did not provide a detailed plan for implementation.
