Introduction

Men's participation in family planning programs is a crucial aspect that determines the continuity of the program. One indicator of male participation in family planning is their willingness to use condoms during sexual intercourse. Unfortunately, the level of male participation in the use of condoms in West Medan District is relatively low, only reaching 7.70% according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2009. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of the delivery of tiered information in the promotion of condom use among men in West Medan District.

Background

Family planning programs are essential in promoting healthy reproductive behaviors and reducing the risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, men's participation in these programs is often limited due to various factors, including social stigma, lack of support from partners, and lack of in-depth understanding of the importance of using condoms. In West Medan District, the level of male participation in the use of condoms is particularly low, highlighting the need for effective interventions to promote condom use among men.

Methodology

This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest approach to analyze the effectiveness of the delivery of tiered information in promoting condom use among men. The population in this study consisted of men of fertile age couples (PUS) in three villages in West Medan District. A purposive sampling technique was used based on inclusion criteria, with a total sample of 27 people, consisting of 9 people at each stage. Data was collected through interviews using questionnaires, and data analysis was carried out with a univariate and bivariate approach.

Results

The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between the knowledge and attitudes of men with fertile age regarding the use of condoms at each stage of intervention. In other words, there is effectiveness in the delivery of tiered information on men's knowledge and attitudes towards the use of condoms. However, unlike the case with action, where there are significant differences in the use of condoms by Pus men at each stage, indicating that the method of delivering tiered information is not effective in changing their actions.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that although men's participation in terms of knowledge and attitudes towards the use of condoms increases through tiered information, changes in real behavior in the use of condoms are still a challenge. This may be caused by several factors, including social stigma, lack of support from partners, or lack of in-depth understanding of the importance of using condoms in preventing STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

Conclusion

Effective condom promotional programs must not only focus on delivering information, but also need to support changes in attitudes and behavior through deeper interactions. With the support of the government and the community, this program is expected to increase male participation in the use of condoms, which will ultimately contribute to the success of the overall family planning program. A multi-level approach in health promotion is very important to create awareness and sustainable changes in society.
