Background

Malignant epithelial tumors of salivary glands are a rare type of cancer that falls under the category of head and neck cancer. Most of these tumors are benign, while the ferocious ones are far less. Tumors of the salivary glands have a diversity of histological types with different characteristics. Throughout the world, there are differences in the incidence, prevalence, and histological types of this tumor relating to ethnic and geographical populations. The salivary gland tumor only contributes 3-10% of all ferocity. In Indonesia, reports on the salivary gland tumors are classified as uncommon. The exact cause of the salivary gland tumor until now has not been ascertained. Morphological variety in salivary gland tumors is a challenge in the diagnosis and classification of this tumor.

Objective

This study aims to determine the profile of patients with a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands in the Department of Anatomy Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra/Hospital Adam Malik Medan during the 2010-2014 period. Understanding the demographic profile of patients with this rare cancer is crucial in identifying risk factors and developing effective treatment options.

Method

This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach, where the sample is examined only once and uses sequential sampling methods. Data was collected from the patient's medical record at the Anatomy Pathology Department of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra/Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan from 2010 to 2014. The data recorded included age, gender, and tumor location. After that, histopathological examination slides are collected and examined by researchers and supervisors. The slide is then assessed based on histopathological types according to WHO classification (2005) and grouped based on clinical data.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

This study is very important to provide deeper insight into the malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands, which although rare, can have serious implications for health. By understanding the patient's demographic profile, such as age and gender, we can see certain tendencies in this cancer. For example, if the data shows that the majority of sufferers are men aged over 50 years, there may be certain more dominant risk factors in the group.

Furthermore, the analysis of the location of the tumor is also very important because some salivary glands can have different biological behavior, which in turn affects the prognosis and treatment options. For example, tumors originating from the parotid gland may have a different severity compared to the tumor of the submandibular gland.

In addition, a better understanding of the histopathological type based on WHO classification can help in the development of more effective therapy. Therefore, this research not only aims to collect data, but also to contribute to a better understanding of the salivary gland tumors in Indonesia, as well as opening the way for further research that will clarify the etiology and management of this tumor.

Thus, the results of this study are expected to have a positive impact, both in clinical handling and in health policies relating to early detection and handling tumors of the salivary glands in the community.
